It was once the homeland of two human races, the Aesdin and the Vandin. Fell sorcerers from the south incited and united the ancient foes of the humans, the giants and goblins, and drove the Aesdin and Vandin south, through the Kameurhorn Mountains and into Holuar (the Hollow Land), but the alliance collapsed before the final blow could be administered. Nell.
How about Legends of the Hollow Lands a suppliment could be Mists of the Kameurhorn.

Or, in Finnish...

How would you translate "Winter's Anvil" or "Anvil of Winter" into Finnish? I got "Talvinen Alasin" from a translating program, but I don't know how accurate that is.

I am getting a clearer picture of the setting through all this...

The four great passes through the Kameurhorns all lead to a single high plateau, the Anvil of Winter. At the further edge of the Anvil lie the narrow, descending canyons known as the Gates of Mist, passageways to the Misting Lands proper. Behind the plateau the great wall of the Horns rise up, an impenetrable barrier to the harsh north wind.

I suspect the Anvil gets a LOT of snow, and for about 10 months of the year.... Pity the hobgoblins kept by the frost giants there!

Musing

If the anvil's surrounded by mountains it will get very little precipitation - including snow. Your anvil will likely be very cold and dry, with a nice layer of permafrost.

Don't say I never do anything for you.

That means "Wintery Anvil". "Winter's Anvil" would be "Talven Alasin".

In theory, the mountains are to the south, lower land to the north. Winds coming from the north cruise over the Misting Lands dropping their normal snow load (scraping a little extra off at the edge of the Anvil), and then SMACK! Right into the Horns. Bang, there goes the snow. Some truly godawful storms, too.

Permafrost sounds about right.

On the other hand, a cold, dry, artic plain does sound more anvil-ish. And cold air has less moisture.

Science + D&D = just making it up.

Not mentioned earlier, but relevant if you really want to discuss weather conditions, is the fact that the "world" isn't a planet. It's a flat, infinite plane that shades into the elemental planes at the edges (and they, in turn, border the "outer" planes, which lead to the Nothing from whence all arose, yadda yadda yadda, cue story of creation). There are hot spots and cold spots (some of which vary, creating seasons), but no poles and no rotation.

Cheers
Nell.

Both of those sound great. Looks like I have a new language to pillage for names...

Finnish is really cool. I've been doing terrible things to it with the complicity of online translator programs. :D
