Help me reward magical equipment to a cleric PC

First Post
I have a cleric PC who is currently 4th level, but is hurting in the magic equipment department. She donates gold that she gains from treasure to the nearby temple, so gold is kinda wasted on her as a treasure type reward.

I want to give reward her with some magic items appropriate to her level and tailored for a cleric.

She doesn't really want to enter combat, so most weapons and armor are out.

Any suggestions?

Somewhere I noticed a magic item that was called something like Divine Vestments. It is something tailored to suit a certain deity, as in appropriate attire for the specific deity's clergy. The robes (or vest, or mantle, or whatever) would grant the cleric access to an extra domain and the subsequent powers granted by the domain - extra choices for domain spells and the extra powers granted by the domain.

Perfect clerical item which is not too powerful, and the extra spell choices scale with the cleric as he/she gains levels. It can be especially interesting for the player if the DM adds specific descriptions of the item and an interesting history that allows some plot hooks.

Sash of the healer: belt slot: 3/day, empowers a conjuration [Healing] spell of up to 3rd level. It should be worth around 5,000--based on a lesser rod of empower spell but slotted and restricted to healing spells for a 50% discount.

Alternatively, no magic--just bonuses: Vow of Powerty as a 6th level feat. (See BoED). It sounds like her character is up that alley anyway.

  • have the head of the chruch tour the cleric around town to show the cleric how much good her donations have done. Whether it's healing the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, bringing some much needed justice, or whatever the church focuses on. Have some tearfully grateful parent or child spontaneously hug the cleric with praises of thanks.
  • have the church give the PC a ceremony of ascention, where she is granted a higher level of office in the church, with the choice of receiving some power and responsibility, or staying "at large" which seems to be working so well for the church. Have the ceremony attended by all of the clergy of the church, and have the PC receive comments about how it is so impressive that a cleric who is so young to be granted such a title, and this can only mean that she is on a path of greatness, and aren't we truly blessed to have her with us at this time?
  • after the ceremony, have the PC escorted to the secret vault and be granted stewardship of the Holy Relic of St. Cleric. Now only has she demonstrated that she is responsible and faithful enough to use it in line with their god's will while also being powerful enough to protect it, it is clear that it would bring the most benefit to everyone if she was using it. And she has most definately earned the right to be entrusted with it.
  • optionally, this is where the high priest can bring the PC into confidence of certain political problems that the chruch is under, whether externally from the government, a rival faith, or from a scism in the church itself. Basically demonstrating that she is worthy to be entrusted with such sensitive information.
This is the kinds of "treasure" that such a player would most appreciate.

As far as magic items, how about a necklace with the holy symbol of the church that glows, functions as a holy symbol, grants contiuous protection from evil and sanctuary, adds +2 or more to WIS, adds +2 insight bonus to K:religion rolls or +4 to any skill check when the question is about the cleric's own religion, funtions as a Phylactery of Faithfulness, and can replicate a channeling feat from Complete Divine or cast a spell if she channels some Turn Undead energy into it. Augury is a good choice. Searing light would be cooler. Basically a lot of little effects mushed into one item, making it a mini-artifact of sorts. Add some history to it, and you have something that will be treasured.
