Help me with high-level downtime

Today we are going to have a session of downtime for some high level PCs. I will be playing one of them, a warrior type that is far from home. I am looking for somewhat generic ideas or maybe examples of what you've seen done before.

Buy stuff, sell stuff, gather information, assist guards...

Here's some ideas:

Mechanical:
You could go shopping? Get some custom items made, sell some stuff and so on.
Make contact with the people who can get you into the next prestige class. (although this is at least half storyline...)

Storyline stuff:
Try and make yourself useful to the local rulers. You might get a title, castle and/or even years worth of problems to solve?
Gather a unit/army/legion of followers.
Found an orphanage.
Find and train an exotic mount.

Really pointless:
Get drunk and chase members of the opposite sex around.
Buy chickens. They only cost 2 cp each.... you could probably afford hundreds of thousands of them?
Hire mercenaries to distract your wizard. Just so they can't get any research done.

Ok, I've been thinking about it some. Most likely I'll try to meet with some various NPCs that made an impression on me. I may also try to find out about the legal claims to an island that is overrun with evil, incase we clear it off completely. I also may try to do some research in a planar library.

Any other ideas?
