Help me with MY silver Marches Campaign.

First Post
Ok, The setup is simple. I'm running a Campaign based on the Silver Marches, but my party consists almost entirely of Uthgardt barbarians. Currently I'm running them through the Forge of Fury, in which I plan to introduce the fact that Obold's orcs are having dealings with the Duergar, for quality weapons and armor, in exchange for Something. The orcs at the Stone tooth are raiding Beorun'as Well (replaces Blasingdell), and are initiating contact with the deep dwarves under orders of Obould. I replaced Great Ulfe for a smart Orc (gotta love Spiked wielding, Expertise using BBEGs :D).

The party consists of:

Branok Wolfang (Brb 4), the son of the recently deceased Chieftain of the Sky Pony Tribe. He was framed for murder and convinced by the tribes shaman to run away. He's basically a do gooder who's fallen on hard times and is drinking a lot. Ah, he's also been framed for his father's death. He currently weilds Wolfang, the sword of his forefathers and mark of the chieftain. A prophecy says that Wolfang's powers grow to match the power of the weilder (ancestor sword like in Rokugan). He was led to the sword by the spirit of his father.

Magdum IronStone (Cl4), he's a Sky Pony warrior who felt the calling of Uthgardt. He currently serves an old cleric of Uthgardt called Lusark Bloodheart, whose a very high level Oracle. He's been sent to aid Branok for a reason known only to the oracle. He's quite taken with Branok's sister, who escaped the clutches of the evil shaman, who wanted to marry her in order to bolster his claim to the Chieftain's chair. He's also a rabid follower of Uthgardt, and believes it's time that the tribes start worshiping Uthgardt and accpet the Totem figures as servants of the God. He plans to take a Shaman homebrew Prestige class that will give him acces to the shades of fallen Uthgardt heroes

Corian Bearheart (Sorc 4). He's a memeber of the Sky pony tribe who befriended Magdum in a previous adventure. Lusark told him (in a divine oracle voice) that his path lay with the party. The player was thinking of taking the Alienist Prestige Class (more for Powergaming reasons than others), but I don't feel that it goes with the flavor. I was thinking of keeping the powers but changing the flavor of the prestige class to a True blood of Netheril or something.

Ünter Orcslayer (Rang 4). A Black lion half-elf tribesman, Unter has a rabid hate for orcs and has travelled all over the Silver marches. In his travels he's enetered Silverymoon as well as journeyed to Lusark's Cave. I'll probably offer him an invitation into the Harper's in the future. He's an old friend of Magdum, and he followed after the rest of the party left for the stone tooth. He knows nothing of his elven mother.

Provos "The Authentic " (Bard 4). He's a young page from Waterdeep who had to run away after been accused of "unmaidening" his liege's duaghter. He claims this is untrue. He also unwittingly took with him a map with the location of The stone Tooth. The party actually arrived ther because they were tracking th orc raiders, but his Liege will believe that Provos stole the map and beat him to the treasure :D

My ideas once they finish the Forge of Fury, is to run a couple of the adventures from the Silver Marches (The Lycanthropes in the Moonwood and the orcs in the passs). After this point they'l probably be Level 6-7, at which point I plan to introduce the Orc INvasion. The plan is to have the PCs begin to unite the different Uthgardt tribes in order to stand against the future Orc invasion. My thoughts (not well formed yet) involve getting Tribal artiftact and travelling to the ancestor mounds of the different tribes. Basically they have to prove that one of them is a prophesized hero who will lead th rtibes to greatness. The obscure passages point towards Branok, but at the end they can be made to fit either Magdum or Unter as well (in case one of them is killed and not raised).

So what I need help is with the following:

1) Powers that Wolfang (the sword) can get as Branok rises in power. Currently it's a +1 Greatsword.

2) Changing the flavor (and some powers) of the Alienist to fit the flavor of the campign a bit more.

3) What exactly happens when they reach the ancestor Mounds? I'm thinking Magdum can make contact with the spirits, which will send them on different quests for fallen atrifacts? Please, give me ideas for quests and artifacts.

4) In the future I was thinking of introducing the idea that Uthgardt (the DemiGod) is actually the son of avatars of Tempus and Sune (the godess of love). He odesn't know that he's the Foehammer's son. This came to me becasue during the Times of Trouble Tempus protected Sune IIRC, as well as mandating that his clerics protect her temples from atatcks (this is from some obscure 2e source IIRC). Should I introduce this, or will it kind of detract from the rest of the plot?

5) A reason why Lusark (the High level NPC) doesn't interven himself when the orcs invade?

6) Finally, any cool ideas to take the plot further would be appreciated.

thanks

Shouldn't be a problem.
"Though they prey on civilized folk and frequently fight among themselves, they're quick to unite, even with non-Uthgardt, against their ancestral enemy: the orcs."

Add Keen and then add Bane: Humanoids, orc.

And that's still only +2 of bonuses. You could also add Mighty Cleaving (another +1). Then, raise the generic plus to +2 and then +3. Then you could also add Speed, but maybe only against Orcs (so make it +2 instead of a +3 enhancement, since it only works against one type).

All that would only be +9 (or +8 if the speed only works against Orcs and you lower the "cost" of the bonus). So, there's still room to add one more enhancement.

So, it would be a Keen Bane:Orcs Mighty Cleaving Greatsword of Speed +3. Eventually.

Barendd:

Bane: I was thinking about giving him the orcbane quality... He'll wipe the floor with my Orc BBEGs in any case. Well, I'll just as well give them levels in frenzied berzerker to make them noteworthy :D

Keen: I'm not "feeling" this sword as Keen.

Mighty Cleaving: I´ll probably give this one if he doesn't take great cleave as a feat.

Speed: I like the idea of speed against Orcs only. That was pretty good. Thanx

So:
Mighty Cleaving.....+1
Bane................... +1
Speed Orcs ......... +2
= +4

Enhancement: = +3

Total: = +7

The sword's called Wolfang, so maybe it could have some other powers that have something to do with Wolves? I don't know, still fishing for ideas.

Mistery Man:

Looked at the North. Thanx! I usulaly check these 2e books, but I'd forgotten. There's more info on each tribe as well. Also good info for my shaman PrC. Good call.

Everybody:
I still need Help. I'm working about 50 hrs a week and trying to get my Masters at the same time. The few spare moments of my time are spent playing soccer in my amateur league and playing (and DMing) DnD. That's why I'm looking for inspiration in these boards. :D

Maybe old Lusark gets called away by an old friend who is dying/needs help in a distant land. Maybe the orcs have a powerful ally or leadership figure that makes surgical strikes to take out key individuals that might pose a major problem to the invading orcs and Lusark is one of these. (This brings up two other possibilities - the possibility of a subplot with involving the orcs' spy, who recon'd these targets, and the possibility that if these targets are magic users, they might be being used against their will to power something to be used against the party and their allies.) Maybe (depending on what deity he's a cleric of) some deal has been struck to keep the followers of certain gods out of the combat - could have interesting implications for the party cleric.

You're thinking of the weapon as "Wolf's Fang", but there's an archaic meaning of the word "wol" that might inspire something - "will". If it were "Will's Fang", maybe the powers grant some bonus to will saves or allow a will bonus to be added to hit and/or damage some number of times per day, or some such.

Hope any of this helps.

Sorry, just reread and realized Lusark's a cleric of Uthgardt. Probably puts any sort of neutrality between him and Ur Gruumsh, or any similar arrangement, right out of the question. ;)

Lusark may have to keep a low profile because an equally powerful Orc shamen (or a dwarf or memeber of the Spellguard) is after him. Or he may just have faith in his chosen tools and be happy to let them go with it, after his divinations showed that his influence would not alter the course of events.

I like the sound of your campaign, it is a bit similar to the one I am running. I decided to run a bit of the Northern Journey adventure 'til they reached Silverymoon, interjecting the 'Thieves in the Forest', 'The Pit at Loch Durnan' and then 'Deadly Ice' adventures in between, and see what happens.

I am also going to run the orc bits out of the back of the Silverymoon guide tied alongside 'Goblin Cave'. They are mixing very much with the Cult of the Dragon and resurrection prophesies with the war in the North going on as a chaotic backdrop. I think eventually they are going to end up doing Gygax's Necropolis mega adventure which will be something of a culture shock when I uplift them from the North and place them in the Old Empires.

One of the players is a Sky Pony Rogue/Barbarian who had to flee his tribe after being falsely accused of theft and worse. I think I will steal your idea for finding a weapon of his people that grows in power and that he is visited by a ghost of his people!

It ain't stealing...it's borrowing ;) I'm borrowing from Rokugan as well.

About the powerful spellcasting NPCs...I was reading the players Guide to faerun and the Shade's storyline. It seems all the powerful arcane spellcasters are busy with either helping out Evereska or atatcking the Shades, including Alustriel. So I'll just use that as an excuse for getting rid of the Uber arcane NPCs. As an added bonus, Alustriel's partaking in the war against Shade will leave a power vacume that will lead to squabbling between the dwarf kingdoms. That's when the orcs attack. :D I really want to play on the card that the last hope for the Silver Marches are the Uthgardt Barbarians.

For the High level dwarven and Uthgardt Clerics I've decided on soemthing else:

Planar War: Gruumsh's orcish hosts are raiding Ysgard (sp?), kinda of parallel to the war in the silver Marches. The duergar God ¿?(IDHTBWMRN) betrays Moradin and also helps lead a foray into Dwarfhome. Therfore the Gods require their high level clerics to act as conduits for the spells. What do you guys think? a Tempus steps out of the Way, he just wants to watch a good show :]

Besides this will allow me to run some Wargaming without introducing a lot of magic into it. Just good old fashioned axe agaisnt spear, :D

As Mystery Man pointed out... the Uthgadrt only need the threat of ors to unite, so I'm going to add that the gray Wolf Tribe (pretty much all infected by lycanthropy in 2e) have gone straight into Malar worship. So they're slowly infecting the other tribes. This ties in with a small sideplot that I had going with the Shaman of the Sky Pony tribe.

Torm: Hey...I lked the will save to damage idea. Probably make it as follows:
During a Rage, Willsfang adds the users Base Will save to damage. This power is useable.....here lies the balance problem...the options are:
A) x times per day
B) Every time the user rages
This will make it really powerful, but this is FR :D also, my players aren't shackled by the need for all consuming balance :D They're just in it for the story. And besides, If they start whining I'll just give the sorc a rod of maximize, the ranger some +5 Mithril Chainshirts of STealth, the cleric some Uber staff, and the Bard (if still alive) will get something as well. Then I'll just sick a Flight of dragons on them :]

So Thanx, and let's keep the good ideas flowing.
