I guess I don't understand why you're forced to have all these NPCs fight them. Are you not the DM? The white dragon is off breeding, the giants are at a holiday, etc. Unless they're carrying a sign saying that they're transporting a king's ransom of treasure, why would every possible NPC along the route -- and why would a dragon's lair be along the route? If it attacked everyone in the vicinity, some NPC would have killed it long ago -- most NPCs wouldn't give a crap about them.

The Forgotten Realms is overloaded with heroes. If all these monsters make it a policy to attack EVERYONE, the entire route would be depopulated (not realistic) and high level NPCs would come along and clear the NPCs (very realistic). Even villains would have to do it, because having a giant swath of the world as a killing zone inconveniences everyone.

This isn't realistic, and you aren't compelled to do this.
