help needed - 3.5 campaign settings.

Buttercup,

I'd admit to some imperfect stuff, but hey that's why I'm here for the Scarred Lands! ;) I do some errata! Well some times. ;)

I would echo the Midnight posts above. The world is basically complete. There are three new products this year but it can definitely be run with just the main book although I would also recommend getting Against the Shadow and Minions of Shadow (and I would give AtS priority over MoS) if at all possible.

Dawnforge is also fantastic, actually, in the true sense of the word as well. You only need the one book, which is convenient because that's all there is for another few weeks or so.

Both settings have really good previews available on the FFG website plus fan support at www.againsttheshadow.org and www.pathsoflegend.org respectively. The Midnight site has the equivalent of about two softback books' worth of free stuff created by fans.

I'm a little late to the party, but my setting, "Morningstar" was also a semifinalist in the WotC setting search. It's a bit different from most settings, in that it's influences are more based on the ancient world-Rome and Greece instead of Medieval Europe, etc... D&Dified of course. It's still developing, and I plan to continue fleshing it out. I'm doing a bit of early spring cleaning, so I have to cut this short, but there's a link in my sig, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have.

Hey I could have said that a while ago when CC Revised came out! ;) Now I got more! I'm sure Midnight will get more.

Sure it will!

Your friend must first decide what kind of setting and campaing he wants, Midnight is more for dark fantasy with hard and grim and gritty on the side, Dawnforge is for high fantasy, as Morningstar is, Scarred Lands I leave to Nightfall, the one and only Scarred Lands guy around.

Ed's work is good and I am really looking at it, but more to modules than settings, so better have it ready for an adventure somewhere in a world done.

Iron Kingdoms has one of the best monster books around, it is promising.

There are many many good settings, I would just avoid the Realms, there are so many things doen fro it that he can just be overwhelmed by the (That i not what the book says" thing.

Else, he could make a homebrew on the develop as needed type.

I would not write off the Realms per se. There are still people out there who don't know the name of every innkeeper in the whole setting by heart :D. I really liked the "Silver Marches" supplement, and that one should be a nice book to start a campaign from.

On the other hand, a free form setting like Necromancer's "Wilderlands" is exciting and open for lots of imaginative ideas but giving enough info for starting right away. It's just a matter of style :).

In fact the Realms may do greatly for campaign ideas and plots, but using it has never worked well for me, not as a DM not a a player.

But I do know it works for a lot of people and that is enough to keep it going. i just wish they would realize that sometimes making things happen should be left for DMs... and that adventures should not be made canon at any time.

I like plot and adventure ideas though, so the realms can, at least, find way to my gaming table in a more subtle manner.

Also, there is AU, which has found a great base of fans around and has some interesting new concepts.
