i figured as much. but i just wanted to get it talked out beforehand.

nothing kills a good roleplaying buzz more than a ruleslawyering question.

"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, and why we died. All that matters is that today, two stood against many. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!"

so how about... feint and move into position beside Vlad.

Bab +8, Sense Motive 0 = +8 Beholder
vs.. -4 unusual body language, +5 Bluff = +1 Fiddle.

which sets me up for a sneak attack next attack.

and then hope Sully lays the smack down on the ball.

Sully can't decide whether to:

  • Cast Glitterdust, blind those eyes
  • Cast Scintillating Sphere, Empowered, for 15d6 v. Reflex save for half
  • Cast Charm Monster
Note that we have "Hero Points" which can be used to guarantee success on one of our die rolls or failure on our opponents. Sully has only one hero point, which he may be using to make a saving throw if I think it is a save or die situation. But maybe another member of the group would make the beholder fail a saving throw.

A charmed beholder might be interesting.

This, combined with a Hero Point to guarantee the beholder fail its save, seems to completely negate the creature... Maybe I'm missing something critical, but a blind beholder strikes me as, to quote Wulf, "a big bag of hit points."

Is it possible to DD one of the fighters (or the sneaker) into an ideal strike position?

perhaps directly above the beholder (possible slam attack on the stalks?) sort of a Death From Above. The advantage to this is that if you hit, something gets crushed, if you miss, your out of eyeshot.

At the very least, instead of grappling the beholder itself, grapple the eyestalks (Using the DFA). Rip them out one at a time if necessary. they give you a great handhold to avoid being thrown and it also takes the creatures attention away from everyone else.

If you luck out and actually grab a stalk, there are many things you could attempt... the fact that the thing is floating essentially means that though it has mass it has no weight. if you are firmly standing on the ground and have a good grip you can beat it off the walls. sure it can try to counter by levitating against your swing but then, like the other attacks, it is distracted from everyone else.

the only drawback is that you become the primary target, but seeing as how you already are one, the tradeoff isn't that bad. and if you succeed.... think of the bragging rights!

One must never underestimate the value of style when attacking a monster. Sometimes an idea conjures up a picture in the DM's head so vivid that he'll actually allow it to happen.

how about bluff to distract (stolen from the D&D movie) ...just a straight Bluff (+5) vs. Sense Motive (0). and then fiddle hides (hide +20 + bonus for range) vs. Spot (i don't know a beholder's spot but i'll guess it is high with all those eyes... so say 20 also). and i move in close while i'm hiding. move silently (+15) vs. listen of (???).

and then next round full sneak attack.
