Go for a less magical solution, then. Perhaps hiring a sage to investigate regenerating creatures such as trolls, then going a quest for possible "ingredients" for an elixir. Perhaps, as an unintended side-effect, the character grows a troll's arm.
Then there are the half-golem templates to consider, or possibly making a deal with a demon or covey of hags, to get a replacement limb.
Or perhaps he becomes a Pale Master...
Or makes a deal with a kyton, in exchange for an arm made of living chains...
