[HELP] Re-Installing Internet Explorer 6

Ranger REG

Explorer
I've been having trouble with my MSIE lately, that at one point not so long ago, I re-installed it, only to find more troubles spawning. For example, I cannot download any file via IE (had to resort to my backup Navigator), cannot download & play any Macromedia Shockwave/Flash movie files (that means I cannot successfully open up the official www.LordoftheRings.net web site), and worse yet I cannot use the the HTML editor function (it supposed to open the page to MSWord).

I want to do a clean re-install of MSIE, and I may need some tips or help. Any instructions regarding uninstalling (if needed) and installing the web browser and possibly Outlook Express would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and please don't fill this thread with any negatively opinionated comment regarding IE6. That's not helping my case at all.

Go to Start | Run..., then paste the following just as it appears:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\setup.exe" /g "C:\Windows\IE Uninstall Log.txt"

From there you can repair IE6. Click on the Advanced button to make sure Outlook, Shockwave, etc are also reinstalled.

If this fails, try installing IE Service Pack 1, if you haven't already. If you have, try a new OS service pack if one is available. Hope this helps!

You don't need to (although backups are always a good idea), since the repair program just replaces application files, not settings or user created files (like bookmarks).

There is one thing you should look out for ... if you have applied patches/service packs that affect IE6 files. If you don't have the latest version of the IE6 installer then you may unknowingly overwrite patched files. This will indeed cause major havoc in your system.

Alright. I know that I have been updating/patching my IE6 with Windows Update. So what can I do to get a clean uninstall and install of IE6, if I can't repair it?

I can't 100% remember the command line for it, however what you want to do is download the installer to your hard drive from Microsoft. This is the small one that then goes off and downloads what you want.

There is a command line to run that downloads the complete Network Install of IE. That way you have a complete install of it (do a search for it on the net).

Uninstall IE compeltely from your harddrive.

Install from the downloaded Network Install.

Under Windows 2000 and XP, removing IE is very difficult. If it is listed in Add/Remove Programs, an older version of IE will be restored in its place. If it's not listed, you will need to uninstall Windows SPs first to get it to show up again. Gotta love MS.

As for installing manually, that's a good idea. I'm having a hard time finding the full install though, just the install stub. The stub is here.

Good luck with this!

You get the full install from the stub. You run the stub with a command line and it downloads the full version. As I mentioned I had forgotten what it was (I'm now a Mac User).

I finally found it in my Virtual PC bookmarks.

"d:\ie6sp1\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

This assumes you downloaded the file to d:\iesp61

This will download it completely to the directory specified.

Okay, I finally got around to doing the above ... but it won't work. Got an error:

Missing Entry IE6Maintenance.

:(

Guess I have to do a clean install, but I am worried if that means all my IE and OE data files will be deleted.
