then I fall back to my "its a storyline/plot device" and is no longer bound by the rules. It would appear that your DM is trying a Tolkien "my precious" style of play here.

In which case it seems plausible that, if there was a negative level involved at some point, the player wasn't told about it. :D

Or the DM didn't invoke one (more likely IMO). With a 20 ego there are 2 negative levels, and it sure seems like this item is in the 20+ ego range.

Regardless, since it is almost a given that it is a storyline/plot device just go with the ride and don't try to rules-lawyer yourself out of the enjoyment. Without even knowing the DM I would guess he has put some forethought into this item's reason for being and where it will lead your group as well as how to get rid of it, if that is required.

Ah, I find it deliciously ironic how people tend to squirm whenever they realize they are forced to trust in the DM.

Yup, we just went through an "encounter" with the Big Baddie and 50,000 skeletons. The previous session ended with the "cliff hanger" were that is what we saw.

A fellow player was all concerned that we shouldn't have come across this since we couldn't beat everything, etc. I told him the DM has a reason for it there is no way it is a planned TPK. Expect that there will be some kind of war going on where we are just on the outside (for now) - the NPC we were working for was the Big Baddie's brother.

Gosh we didn''t have to fight a single thing, a simple interaction with the Big Baddie and we were off.

Something else that the sword could be is a modified trap the soul with some NPC inside that has to be released somehow. But somehow, that doesn't seem real likely using the information given so far, but if the party is trapped up with handling a problem in certain way they might have missed some clues - happens all the time.

oh, the evil, vile sword and what it did to me...

the sword did not impart any type of negative level... i know this because there were MANY instances in which i would have been unconsious or dead if i had fewer hit points than what was on my sheet. that being said... i don't think my DM actually thought about imposing the negative levels. or it may have been that he was just having way to much fun seeing me (and the other players) squirm as i played an evil character... as for the item being a plot hook or other thing... no way. i know shadis to well, and it was put there only as an after thought (i think he created the stats for the sword after i picked it up).

the thing that worries me most about it is that if its onlyt supposed to be able to communicate via telepathically with its possesor, how did it connect with the WF? he never touched it, and usually only got within about 10 to 15 feet of it... that is what scares me...
