Help with Disguise Self - Simple ?

Thanks for checking this out, I have a quick ? on Disguise Self, specificly coming from a Hat of Disguise.

Character has changed their appearence using the Hat of Disguise, including what their equipment looks like.

If an item is removed from the character will the Disguise Self still effect the item or will the item change back to its original form?


Specificly, the character is a drow, disguised as a surface elf, including her items since they are all still from the underdark and have drow artwork on them. This includes her sword which she is taking off and handing to another person.

The spell effect works upon a creature, and affects that creature's equipment only so long as said equipment is attended by that creature. The moment an item leaves your possession, it will revert to its true appearance.
