D&D (2024) Menzoberranzan Meets The Sopranos - A Drow Campaign.

TheSword

Legend
All the discussion about evil drow encouraged me to reread Homeland and I forgot how much I loved it. I have been inspired by a RA Salvatore interview where he mentions being heavily influenced by the Godfather in writing of Menzoberranzan Drow. Each house like a crime family. Fully of interesting characters, murder and betrayal everywhere. I’ve long wanted to run an Evil Drow House campaign where the PCs play family members rising through the ranks. I have a synopsis for a campaign (levels 1-10) with an option to extend to 11-20. It’s influenced by the sopranos as well as the adventure in the original Menzoberranzan boxed set.

Guy, Ryan and Steven - Stop Reading Now!

The Drow House

The family unit would be a crucial part of the campaign with some distinctive characters that will feature again and again.

Previous Matron Mother (Deceased) - A weak matron whose mismanagement saw the family fall from 11th house to 23rd. Murdered by her younger sister.

Matron Mother - Current Matron. A shrewd leader of the house trying to rebuild the family fortunes.

High Priestess - Daughter of the previous matron. Eldest cousin to the PCs. A brutal psychopath. Unsubtle and clumsy. Fanatical to Lolth but to the point of blindness. Hates the current matron and wants to take her place. Strong but suffers from some of the worst flaws of her mother.

Elderboy and Weapon Master. A foppish decadent. Debauched and lazy. He has allowed the family military forces to become very lax under his mother (the previous matron)

Patron of the current matron. A Master of Sorcere, a commoner, and one of Carcellen’s strongest supporters. Unfortunately he is planning to betray the family to their enemies as part of a long running ploy involving.

Priestess - The youngest daughter of the current matron. A year or two younger than the current PCs. Will still be training even after the PCs graduate. A potential ally but also someone they can shape in their own image if looked after.

The PCs - the three eldest children of the current Matron. One arcane class attending Sorcere, One divine attending Arach-Tirilith, One martial attending Melee-Magthere.

Campaign Synopsis.

The campaign would starts at the academy at level 1-3 completing trials and tests to introduce them to Menzoberranzan life and set the scene. Lots of class related activities - gaining familiars, some minor magic items, building a reputation and networking with some useful characters from some of the big houses. Probably ran in individual solo sessions. The house patron is a Master of the academy and may assist them but might also try to see them off to prevent a future threat.

Levels 3-5 continue this but as a team completing patrols into the baufwaff and dealing with various threats - including an assassination threat to them from another house or which the players must work together to defeat.

After graduation at level 5 the campaign focuses on rising to prominence within their family - a mixed bag as you’ve seen earlier. Their family was once much more powerful only a step or two away from the council. The previous matron mother saw the family decline and only under the current matron are its fortunes starting to improve. The players might think that one or more family members were behind the assassination attempt at the academy.

The PCs represent the strongest agents that the current matron can rely upon and she impressed upon them that nothing is more important than the house name. The cousins and the previous matron are cautionary examples of what happens when individuals put themselves before the house and the matron reminds them that together they can achieve anything. There should be plenty of plotting within the family to ensure PCs don’t turn on each other.

The next six levels form the bulk of the campaign and would involve various missions which the party can complete to strengthen themselves and their house.

A mission to discover why certain traders and businesses have stopped making payments to the house - a gang of males sponsored by a rival house, who are trying to corner the trade. Chance to introduce Braegan D’aerthe who might have an interest in seeing these rivals off? First introduces house Nurbonnid the 21st house and long time rival of the PCs house - a rival which secretly lusts over the houses much stronger compound. Rewards could include improved drow clothing - Piwafwi and drow boots. As well as chance to outfit the common soldiers.

A mission to reinvigorate the disrupted trade of adamant from house Mines, that results in a fight for resources and a retaliatory raid on a Nurbonnis Faezress facility as well as give the house a link to the Duergar of Gracklstugh. This can be rewarded with Drowcraft arms and armour.

A mission involving the high priestess. That involves some brutal and excessive act on her behalf. Either rescuing her from the consequences of it or trying to mitigate the fallout from it. Opportunity to double cross or neutralise. Details more information about lolths worship and possibly the slaves of Menzoberranzan.

A mission involving the weapon master elder boy. Rescuing him from some form of debauchery or trying to cover it up. Opportunity to double cross or recruit. A test of the families honour and a way of gaining reputation within noble circles.

A testing of each of three characters. Similar to the tests of Lolth. A test of strength for the arcane caster, a test of endurance for the martial and a test of loyalty for the priestess. Passing this will grant a useful item as a reward for the player.

Lastly a false diplomatic expedition to another force in the underdark (probably the Duergar). This is actually a ruse designed to get the PCs out of the city but with the opportunity for them to turn the trick on its head, gain a useful ally and return to Menzoberranzan stronger than before. It also reveals the treachery of the Patron and confirms that a senior house is behind everything.

The campaign would culminate with an attack by house Nurbonnis that kills the Matron and either sees the PCs survive or fall. They have the opportunity to use all the allies they have built up to this point to defeat the attack. If they survive they can level an accusation at house Nurbonnis before the ruling council leading to the full might of the Academy wiping Nurbonnis from the city and if the players were successful leading to a position several rungs higher on the map and the favour of house Baenre. That should comfortably see the party gain level 10. One PC become the next matron of of the house, one becomes the next house mage, and the last become the next house weapon master.

Other Considerations

There is a wealth of Drow information already out there. Particularly the Menzoberranzan boxed set, and the the 4e system agnostic book Menzoberranzan City of Intrigue released just before 5e.

I would use the bastion rules to represent the PCs strengthening of their House to gain some tangible benefits, leveled followers etc.

There are a huge quantity of underdark and Drow elements in AD&D and 3e that can be converted easily to 5e.

For all those who love Drow and Menzoberranzan (and Sopranos) what are your thoughts?

What other missions would be good additions or that could replace some of the elements of mentioned. How could this be improved? What would you make sure got included?

I might let the players make a few NPCs they each know, since they grew up in this city. A few allies, a few contacts that may be impartial, and a few enemies they built upon the way. You will have these people in the back pocket to use for help or to come in a backstab the PCs as needed. A couple can be dragged out by allowing them to escape a few times before finally be taken care of by the PCs. Make some the mini-boss for some adventures. Have a few become henchmen to the PCs if needed.

Another adventure could be that there is an attack upon the city by something like undead, but not another drow city. They council draws in several groups to take care of it and the Pcs find themselves with another house they are not aligned with to go out. Maybe place one of the PCs enemies with the other house or leave it as a place to gain an ally or enemy. This makes the players feel they are between the undead and the other house. They may want to work together to deal with the threat, but save some power back to deal with backstabbing- or to be the backstabber.

These are two awesome ideas!

I’ve seen Contacts used where players can have a number of ‘trusted’ or at least regularly used contacts in any given location. That they can draw upon for resources. The academy would be a way to meet new NPCs that graduate along side them. Chance for some rivalries.

An incursion of a rival underdark power would be great. Could be three houses involved - the PC house. Nurbonnis their rival and a third house which could be as you said a potential ally or another rival. Deep Gnomes make a good foe, but so could lots of other foes. Potentially even a hive of beholders with their charmed servants for a real challenge.

One thing I thought about was starting the campaign just before the event of homeland. There could be the chance to participate in the destruction of house Teken’duis as students as a nice little combat challenge which would also set the stakes.

The rapid rise and fall of several houses included Do’Urden could be a back drop which would accelerate the houses rise. Might even get a chance to hunt down Drizzt which could be a fun way to gain the spider queens favour… after the Do’Urdens are done for of course!

Just be careful if the players read the books and want to throw in cannon you do not or not know about. I would also keep the guest appearances of Drizzt to a minimum. I would throw in a rival statuette of Guenhwyvar that the PCs can find. Maybe something not a panther from the surface world.

Don’t worry my players are cynical old salts and I’m probably the best read on Drow - though they have great knowledge. We’ve all read the Drizzt Prequel trilogy and War of the Spider Queen. I have a very loose view of canon. Useful for inspiration but as soon as the players interact it goes off in other directions.

We’ve already seen Elminster Bloodeagled in another campaign. If Drizzt makes an appearance it will hopefully be to meet a sticky end.

My days, the poster map that came with City of Intrigue is beautiful. There is a high res version on Mike Schley’s website I got for a few dollars. Perfect for VTT. Here’s the low res thumbnail.

I thought this was a great article for inspiration.

10. Marriages Break Down Over Time: Plenty of opportunity for PCs to have romantic relations that result in betrayal, murder or Lolth’s Test of Loyalty. Plus there is the duplicitous patron as a good example.

9. Cops Conduct a Bad Raid: In this case the idea of Drow successfully hiding the evidence could fit into the idea of a house raid being completed flawlessly. Or a plot that is designed to humiliate the house being fixed by the PCs before they get caught.

8. The Main Character Kills Someone: I think a killing - either for advancement or self defence should be a key part of each PCs Academy section. A graduation test as a minimum.

7. Police Corruption is a Major Theme: The Ruling Council is the most corrupt a political force can get. Everything they do should be based on self interest. It would make for an awesomely unpredictable appeal to authority. They’re the heads of the five families basically… but eight.

6. The Police Win In The End: This might be a problem - unless you see the ultimate police as Lolth - embodied by the ruling council. Yochlols as her agents. They see everything. They know everything. And when you think you got off scott free the other houses bring you down when Lolths disfavor falls upon you.

5. The Big Meeting: There are a couple of big meetings that the party can be privy to. The early ones would be house conferences where the nobles of the house gather to plot, plan, assert themselves, establish a pecking order, and plan to take down the others. While later on the party could get to attend the ruling council - either as witnesses or at higher levels with a seat on the council. There’s also the ubiquitous summons to Quellarzorl for a cup of tea with Matron Baenre.

4. Gangsters Love a Good Wedding: I don’t think there will be many marriages in this campaign. Patrons are for reasons and for seasons. But I think there are great opportunities to celebrate rituals. Graduation from the academy being one. The destruction of a house that fails a raid. The ascension to high priestess or Master of Sorcere. Social gatherings would make for great roleplaying encounters for noble Drow.

3. People Check for a Wire as Paranoia Sets In: So there won’t be electronics but a spy or traitor that has sending stones linked to another Drow house. Or scrying spells that reveal who is doing the spying. Or even discovering a traitor has been meeting or receiving wealth/favours from rivals. Lots of opportunities to turn the tables on a spy.

2. A Main Character Gets Whacked: I’m not going to make a plot point of killing a PC, but the matron mother getting assassinated by her patron/daughter proves that crime doesn’t pay. The fact that it opens an opportunity for a PC Priestess is irrelevant. I also think the tests of Lolth are an opportunity to see some key NPC whacked!

1. You Can’t Have A Good Crime Story Without Betrayal. This one kind of speaks for itself. Houses, teachers, patrons, cousins, servants - NPCs should be betraying each other and being betrayed by PCs on a session by session basis… just so long as PCs don’t betray each other. It couldn’t be more Drow.

Just about done with book 2 in “The Dark Elf Trilogy”. Very excited to hear how this goes and see what your PC’s actually end up doing and how they navigate life in the Underdark.

They’re classic books!

You should really consider the War of the Spider Queen books when you finish. They are excellent. Reallly good examples of high level PCs too.
