Help with Fighter/Ranger

JBear, I really like a lot of your ideas, but I was wondering if there's a way to completely flip this class to a ranged fighter while retaining the fighter/ranger hybrid. Thanks again!

There isn't much point. 4e fighters don't do ranged*, so if you want to be ranged primary, then you probably want to be straight ranger (possibly taking a warlord MC feat for 'classically trained noble warrior' flavor that's at least a little useful).

* Other than basic attacks, and possibly some obscure powers I can't remember right now.

Right, if you want to go the other way around, just play a straight Bow Ranger. 18 dex 16 str. Be dumb instead of uncharismatic and Train Intimidate.

Twin Strike is both ranged and melee, and it will be your staple power. Pick whichever powers draw your eye. You can't go too far wrong. Bow Ranger is perhaps the most basic character in the game. Mostly you'll just use Twin Strike or powers like Twin Strike that do a little more damage.

Why you want to be okay at melee, I'm not sure. Rangers are very mobile and have lots of ways of getting out of tight situations where shooting with a bow is dangerous.

What you might like to take into consideration is the new fighter that has come out with the Essentials book Heroes of the ... something. The fighter, instead of a defender is a striker. And they are rewarded for having high DEX. All its attacks are Basic attacks practically so he's just as dangerous with a bow as with a sword. From what I gather it's a very simple class as well. But so is a bow ranger. Your not missing out on any real complexity. It may be what you are looking for.

How does one jump these said hoops? DM exceptions?
No Hoop Jumping really required. 13 WIS is the prerequisite. Rangers benefit from WIs, so do Fighters. You can start with that from level 1 but that leaves your CON at 11, which means 1 healing surge less.

If you don't take the Born Under a bad Sign back Ground that's 1 HP less as well. If you do take it, well, then 1 less in CON is perhaps something to consider, it depends on your DM.I make it challenging for my players to be able to take extended rests, so in a case like that 1 healing surge can be important.

That is why I opted for 12 CON 12 WIS and then at level 4 when I want to multiclass into avenger I bump WIS 1 to meet the prerequisite.

There is another avenger multiclass feat that has WIS 15 as a prerequisite but in my opinion it is inferior. It only lasts until you hit with one of your double roll attacks. The one I suggest lasts 2 rounds. Unfortunately you have to train in religion, but oh well. It's worth it.

As a basic comment I'd say think less about what class you want and more about what you want the character to do.

If you're up on the 4th ed concept of roles the big question is whether you want to be a striker or a defender.
If you want to be a striker wielding 2 weapons and a bow then a straight ranger build is the way to go.
If you want to be a defender then you can probably do enought as a tempest fighter without worrying about being a hybrid character (keep dex up and just use a ranged basic attack with the bow)
I'll confess that I don't know much about how Hybrid classes work but I'd suggest that playing a straight class or two first is probably a better way to get started.
