Help with level adjusments and ECL

What is the difference?

OK let me take a guess at this. Making a 9th level PC. A Thri-keen has a level adjustment of 1 and an ECL of 3. It would only have 6 class levels correct.

A half ogre has a listed leve; adjustment of 1 so it would have 8 class levels.

Am I correct?

Level adjustment is what you add to your Hit Dice and class levels to get your Effective Character Level (ECL).

So yes, ECL is your Level Adjustment + Hit Dice + Class Levels.
