help with my 1st level character

Terry Wogan

First Post
hello, i would like to make this character.

party make-up:
human necromancer level 1
human fighter/rogue level 2
dwarven cleric level 1

so, i dont particularly have any ideas of my own, although if you could give me some ideas of what would greatly benefit this party i would be grateful.

stats:

str 10
dex 13
con 12
int 17
wis 13
cha 16

the stats can not be moved around

the game is set in the forgotten realms and the dm has let each character have some sort of bonus, the fighter rogue is 2nd level and the other 2 characters have some minor magic items which are worked into their background.

i can use any FR books or normal d&d books, no oriental adventures though.

any ideas for class, race, feats, skills etc. gratefully accepted.

Anything, really, though I'd lean toward fighter or rogue (or any class that can fill in a melee role) since you don't have a full class of either. If you play a fighter-type, I'd make your character heavily armored, because you don't want your cleric or your fighter/rogue tanking (the cleric needs to be able to heal and the fighter/rogue needs to be able to flank).

EDIT: my mistake, I dind't read your post closely enough. If those are the stats fate has dealt and they can't be altered, then yes, I'd probably go Bard as well, though Monk is a possibility as long as you put your stat increase points into Dex and Wis down the road. With those stats you'd make a superb bard, and a fine sorcer or wizard as well. Still, I hold firm in my belief that what your party really needs is a heavily-armored melee character to soak up the majority of the punishment.

my party

i should really mention that the cleric is quite poor in combat and the fighter/rogue is a kinda pirate, so i assume he will be lightly armoured and kinda dextrous. also, even though i cant change my stats, the character doesnt have to be min/maxed......i just want some cool ideas on what race, class, feats, skills etc. to take for a cool concept.

min/maxing is fine too, though:D

Yeah, sounds like you need a real tank. Unfortunately, since you can't change your stats heavy armor isn't a good idea, because with a 10 Str you'll be encumbered by anything heavier than studded leather. Maybe you could talk to your DM and ask if you could swap your Int and Str, or Cha and Str? Just a thought.

There's not min-maxing, and then there's just playing something that sucks rocks. Monks are in general are quite stat-dependent, and their only two "dump stats" are Charisma and Intelligence . . . his two highest stats.

As a monk, you'd be about as useful to the party as the necromancer's familiar.

If you want to make a capable character, you have a choice between a bard, a wizard, a sorcerer, and maybe a diplomacy-skill based rogue/sorcerer. Arcane trickster down the line isn't out of the question.

If it were me, I'd go wizard. What kind of wizard? Well, that's up to you, isn't it! :)

All of us can suggest cheaty max-minning feats to take. But you're interested in a cool *concept* . . . but that really needs to come from *you*. Do you want to blow stuff up? Or perhaps be an enchanter/charmer? Given your high charisma, that's a possibility -- not many wizards have a 16 charisma . . . that could be something to build a character concept on. Maybe you come from a noble family (that could be the "bennie" the DM gives you).

If you can use Monte's alternate sorcerer from Book of Eldritch Might II, then do that. If you can't use that sorcerer, I would be a rogue/sorcerer. For your first level, take rogue, but don't bother with pick pockets, disable divice, and the other traditional rogue skills. Instead, concentrate on forgery, gather information, and skills of that sort. See, you're this sleazy little guy, ("psst! You wanna buy a ring of protection? I know you need one, if you're gonna walk around in this part of town.")who has always made his living being a con man, counterfeiter, fence, pimp, whatever cheap, quick, dishonest job you can turn your hand to. But things start to go wrong. (Work with your DM on this.) Right in the middle of chatting up a mark, you get a dizzy spell, and dancing lights appear all around you. In other words, you're beginning to manifest sorcerous powers. By the time you have enough xp to go to level 2, you've really become a sorcerer. But you're gonna fight it, because you like being a sleazy little con man. So take spells like change self, charm, and so forth. Alternate levels of rogue & sorcerer until you have about 3 of each, then go the rest of the way as a sorcerer.

For weapons, you might focus on daggers. In fact, turn him into a walking cutlery store, with 6 or 8 daggers hidden all over his person. Take point blank shot and precise shot so you can hit anything with your little knives. Those feats will also help you with ranged spells too.
