I can't imagine that the 2e comments are what is bugging your friend to the point of leaving. As you said, there was more to it than just that.
Regarding 2e vs 3.5e both were valid systems. I liked each version in turn and there are times that I wouldn't mind going retro and playing a couple one-shot adventures with 1e or 2e. Perhaps you might consider that for your group. If you aren't up to speed on 2e let your resident 2e fan run it. Injecting a little 2e into your gaming schedule should get him to lay off talking about it during your games. On top of that it will let your other players have a taste of what he is talking about so when he wants to incorporate a 2e rule they'll honestly be able to evaluate it and make a informed decision. At any rate, if you give him the opportunity to run a 2e game and you keep quiet about 3e in it you can ask him to keep quiet during your 3e game since you extended him that courtesy during his game.
