Help with Skillmonkey

First Post
I want an optimized thief/negotiator skillmonkey. All 3.5 books/magazines allowed. I don't want to get involved in combat at all, I need to be invisible/undetectable/intangible when in combat and just sit in my corner until the muscles get the job done.
I've seen some appealing features like cerebral blind, darkstalker and the shadowmind prc but i need a suitable combination. First thoughts are starting as Human Factotum(3) with able learner, a level of Marshal and motivate dexterity aura, improved combat expertise with allied defence, keen intellect feat and maybe some exemplar levels. Waiting for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Factotum is always a good choice, because it's the ultimate skillmonkey.

Invisibility will usually cover you pretty well in combat if you don't do anything. Silence will add onto that. Marshal might be iffy since you'll be getting a bit into MAD by picking it up for auras. If you want others affected by your aura in combat then you can't be stealthy. Still, Intelligence and Charisma are two pretty darn good abilities to be dependent on. You could potentially get more out of Motivate Intelligence because of Brains Over Brawn at Fact 3.

Start as a Changeling Rogue 1 using the Races of Eberron sub. level. Trades Trapfinding (hint: you get it from Factotum anyway!) for a whole slew of cool socal skill stuff, like always being able ot take 10 on them, putting on disguises faster, etc... Also, you get 10 + int skill points at the racial sub levels. So...x4 at level 1...

You want to be exalted good and pick up Nymph's Kiss feat at level 1, to get yet another +1 skill point per level and a nice bonus to your charisma skills. Then go Factotum 3 and back to Rogue, or mix your rogue and factotum levels up as needed.

If you don't care much about combat, use martial (ie, "feat") rogue from UA. Trades SA for fighter bonus feats. Which means you get them at levels 1, 2, 4, etc... Helps with the massive feats list a bit and makes Rogue 2 or 4 an even more tempting breakpoint than normal. Consider prestige classing out after hitting rogue 4 / factotum 3. There are plenty of prestige classes for what you want to do: Spymaster, Nightsong Infiltrator, etc... Changeling opens up a few of its own, both race specific (Cabinet Trickster) and just ones in general for shapechangers, which you are as a Changeling.

OP, your feat list and general ideas sound promising, especially Darkstalker, highly recommend that feat for skulking around at mid/high levels.

Jack: Despite BOB adding int to them, they remain Str and Dex checks / skill checks. BoB DOES make Motivate Dexterity even more awesome, as you're now adding three stats to your initiative and a slew of skill checks, though.

- Spymaster = Must : Nothing beats the ability he gets in the last level [(Deep Cover (Ex)]. Divination spells simply don't exist for the real you.

- Some Exemplar levels: Definitely a good choice for what you want.

- invisible/undetectable : Ulteriorly, the only possible way (that I know of) to do that at 100%, is a combination of HIPS + Superior Invisibility (8th level spell...unfortunately) + some ability/spell to block divinations (like Non Detection).
...No "something"-sense, no spells (including true Seeing due to HIPS) no spot (provided your Hide is high enough) can see you/detect you... but it's a very "dedicated" path... Otherwise any single HIPS or Invisibility work just fine if you are not looking to be completely bulletproof in that sector.

- For your social skills: Assume Quirk, Second Impression, Social Recovery, (skill tricks) from Comp Scoundrel, are also great.

I'm actually getting really intrested in this build / character idea. Someone with lots of mindgames but avoids direct combat and violence. Some things I've noticed:

Cabinet Trickster is cool, though the save DCs are weak (can be buffed, see below), but for practical combat use you basically NEED Mindspy levels from C.Warrior as well. They do synergize great, however. Warshaper is also nice for adapting your form on the fly and general combat usage (I know you don't care about combat, but just getting crit immunity by way of constantly shifting organs is interesting, don't need to take all 5 levels, or even 3). Problem is, they all qualify about the same time. CT you need 9 skil ranks, so entry at level 7+; Mindspy you can actually get in at level 6 slightly before CT...except it requires detect thoughts, which you're getting from CT... Warshaper's only hurdle is the BAB +4, so if you just did full BAB classes you could go in at 5, grab your 2 levels, and move on to CT. Unfortunately, any lead in you'd want for this type of build not only isn't full BAB, it's actually decimating its BAB trhough medium BAB multiclassing. :(
Which means you basically just have to do Factotum 3 / Rogue 2-4 / Marshal 1 and only after that get to the cool, build-focused stuff.

Daunting Prescence feat (Libris Mortis): The Fear Handbok rates it poorly because it is a standard action single target and just makes the target shaken. But I like, it, it's ranged (30 ft), lasts for minutes, has a respectable save DC, and stacks with pretty much every other source of fear there is for escalating fear.

Mindbender Prestige Class (C.Arcane): IF you can use Practiced Spellcaster/Manifester to count as a 5th level arcanist to meet the pre-reqs, this is possibly worth dipping Beguiler or Telepath Psion (using transparency rules), even though the two levels will utterly annihilate your pathetic BAB. Both classes fit with the build well thematically, and this gives you a constant telepathy ability to 100 ft and qualifies you for...

Mindsight feat (Lords of Madness): Now your telepathy is radar to auto-detect any intelligent creatures within its range!

Veil of Allure (14,000 gp, face slot) from MIC adds +2 to save DC of all cha-based supernatural abilities. This buff Cabinet Trickster's Thought Tricks, Detect Thoughts ability, the Daunting Prescence feat, and possibly more!

Taking mind games to a whole new level is the PHB2 Fade Into Violence feat. Its restrictions are insane, but you can actually meet them and STILL be mind reading and thought trick dazing/stunning/confusing people each turn, since you're not "attacking" or "using spells." It's still pretty underpowered, but I like the flavor.
Feat synopsis:
[sblock]Choose an opponent as an Immediate Action. For the current encounter, if that opponent is threatening you and an ally of yours, you may make a Bluff check opposed by your opponent’s Sense Motive check to make your opponent attack your ally (+4 bonus on your Bluff check if your opponent is a larger size category than you).
You may only use this ability if you are wearing light armor or no armor, have nothing in your hands, have made no attacks, & have targeted no enemies with spells. Once you void any of these conditions, your opponent sees you as a threat and can attack you normally.[/sblock]

I'm not sure if it fits your ideas, but take a look at the Master base class from the "War of the Lance" Dragonlance book.

It focusses on (one or two of ) the four skill-groups Craft,Perform,Profession and Knowledge, and grants various skill-related bonusses as class abilities, as well as skill-related bonus feats.

He could call himself the Master Baiter, as it were.

Should he choose to also invest ranks in Speak Languages, it would also make him a Cunning Linguist.
