help with the first mage around...

Mad Scientist
Hi everyone.
For ince I'm a player, in a historic campaign Nogorod 827.
And I'm playing the first wizard in the neighbourhood.
It's quite tough, since I can't steal spells out of opponent spellbooks. I also rolled unusual stats: STR 5, Con 7, Dex 14, INT/CHA/WIS 18 (yeah I know these are awesome stats, but I have witnesses:)).
I made it to L5 (necromancer4/undead loremaster 1), with mind over body, spell focus (necromancy), craft wondrous item.
With my few precious Hp and my pathetic combat abilities surviving has become quite tough (even, with false life/mage armor/blazing shield/shield, I'm still dying after one hit).
So anyone has any killer combo for my character to survive (Ps: I've managed to obtain a L1 rogue Juju-zombie bodiguard?
Any magic items I should be making, any spells that could really help me?
Help the old sick wizard survive:p

Pray that your DM is kind and let's you get a few choice spells from Book of Eldritch Might AND Relics and Rituals. ;)

Oh and if you're REALLY lucky, try for a blue ring of conjures. Or perhaps Augment summoning thus you can use Summon Undead from Magic of Faerun.

Well the DM is very nice for allowing new spells: anything published by a serious company is ok.
The problem is that it is an historic campaign so I must research every spell I take (appart from the 2/lv), and I haven't got much money in the first place. There is NO way I can get my hand on a ring of conjurer, although I use SUI and SUII a lot (They have saved me several times) :p
Any items I want to have, I'll have to make:mad:
So i have to choose wisely!

In your place, I would take Craft Magic Item and save up so I could create an Amulet of Health (bonus to Con).

Did you already summon a Toad familiar? That would help with your biggest weakness, HPs.

So, what's put your PC in the dead-book to date? Details, man, details.
Well the party is a group of 4, with 1barbarian, 1 shaman, 1 ranger/druid. My biggest problem is that we always end up fighting against a 3-1 ratio: this means that the tanks of the party cannot protect my character efficiently. Even with AC in the 26-28 range it doesn't help a lot since I'm surrounded by 3-8 barbarians: I just don't have the firepower to drop a L1 barbarian in one round, so by the time the tanks can help me I'm dying or close.
My main problems are:
1)Firepower: at L5 none of my spell as the "oumph" to drop a L1 barbarian. Lesser orbs inflicts 3d8 so is my best bet. Fireball (5d6=avg of 17=8 after saved) cause more problem...
Phantom howl (R&R) could be effective, but Fort save against barbarians is a bad idea...
2)survival: I have 18HP +11 on average from falselife, so even if they only hit me on a 20 they still cause 1d12+9, 2 hit and I'm dying messily (so about after 3-4 rounds of combat).

Yeap my main problem is that the group doesn't protect it's firepower (me) efficiently, but with only 4 vs 15-20 not much they can't do much.
Any idea on how to improve my survival chances?

If your main opponents are barbarians and other melee types, staying out of reach would be a priority for you. Fly or Levitate would definitely help with the "surrounded by barbarians" problem, especially when combined with Protection from Arrows. Invisibility and/or Expeditious Retreat would help you stay out of trouble as well.

What are your prohibited schools?

If it's not Illusion, getting mirror image would help matters.

If you are facing 3-1 odds, seems likely they are much lower level. Sleep might help you cut down the odds, depending on exactly what level most of the opponents are. Color Spray is another possible solution.

You could use Invisibility and then summon creatures to help your friends. The 50% miss chance would make it less likely the opponents would hit you.

Summoning a single Celestrial Dire Badger might also be effective. The creature would have DR, so many of the barbarians hopefully would not be able to hurt it. This would put one more body between you and the opponents.
