Check out Treantmonk's Guide. I think the guide only talks about options from the core book, so you'll still want to peruse character archetypes, feats, and spell options from APG and Ultimate Magic/Combat. It's possible to make a strong wizard using only core if you don't want to read all that.

Generally, I'm a fan of the divination specialist because winning initiative is really important, but there's lots of good advice in there.

I'd suggest Teleportation (it's in APG, basically a more specialized Conjuror) school. Trading acid dart for supernatural teleportation right from level 1 is a winner in my book...

The holdover metamagic feats from 3E are just as good/bad as they were in 3E. Beyond those, I'd say Bouncing, Persistent, Selective, and Dazing Spell are the best metamagic feats new to Pathfinder. Meta rods of many of those can suffice if he can't afford the feats or spell level adjustments.

Item Crafting costs no xp now and lets you ignore pre-reqs if you can make a higher spellcraft DC, which is cake for wizards. So he may want to get craft wondrous at least, though he can certainly get a lot of mileage out of his free Scribe Scroll alone.
