Want Heroes of Battle?

You'll be better off with Cry Havoc from Malhavoc Press.

No, you really won't.

AFAIAC, the only thing really worth taking home from Cry Havoc was the army combat system.

The skirmish system was a mess... between bizarre scaling and dependance upon tables that would make my 1e DMG jealous, it just doesn't fly IMO.

I really like Heroes of Combat.
It's one of the best books I've read on running encounters in D&D. Not just for the battlefield even, the advice is generally excellent.
I'm not that interested in crunch, but what is provided seems reasonable to me.
This book provides me exactly what I was looking for, a way to include my current PCs in a battlefield situataion without changing the session into a wargame.

It also has some artwork by WAR, which is always a plus in my book.

Actually, on the matter of Cry Havoc, we agree: as an event book, it isn't great. But the system of Mass Combat makes it worthwhile IMO.

Ahh, tastes and colors. ;)

Just a clarification, Psion.

You're talking about Cry Havoc not Heroes of Battle correct?

I finally took a look at Heroes of Battle.

I do not think that it sucks.

But I do think that it is priced about $5 more than I would be willing to pay for it. Some okay ideas, I actually like the VP system of using the heroes action to determine the outcome of the battle by assigning different results different VP requirements. It seemed like it would work well for Midnight, with the heroes' armies being driven back. They may not be able to win a battle, but they can cut their losses. For other games I think that I would prefer an actual mass combat system.

I do not like some of the other ideas as much (Adamantine catapult stones?!!!)

But there is some useable material there.

HoB is 192 pages correct?
If so, then 30 bucks is the norm.

158 actually. It is a bit thin to be a hardback.

I like it though.

VP and RPs are interesting tools that I'll make use of.

Some general battlefield advice as to how to run it, although that can honestly be dumbed down to any event based type campaign.

So, what in particular did you get out of it that you didn't already have going in?
