Theremin moved down the stairs after Mindra, the elf ahead of him as silent as her kind typically were. Theremin, however, was less adroit. He placed his foot wrong, catching the smooth edge of a step, and lost his footing, banging against the wall and down the stairs with loud footfalls as he tried to maintain his balance and not go into a complete tumble.

Sayine flapped her wings, launching off his shoulder lest she be pulled into a tumble, as well.


LEVEL 2

As Owyn opened the next door to what appeared to be another servant’s quarters, he heard a commotion from up the steps.

“What was that?” Beturea whispered nervously. “More kobolds?” The torchlight wavered as her hand shook, and she clutched her rusty kobold dagger in front of her.

Owyn cursed quietly as he turned to the sound.

"Quick, get into the room."

He then faced the closed door to the stairwell in silence, sword drawn and shield raised to just below his eyes.

Mindra could see torchlight flickering along the walls from below, and then it was gone. Someone or something was down the stairs on the next floor.


LEVEL 2 (Owyn, Beturea)

Beturea yelped in fear and hurried into the small servant’s room with the torch, hiding behind Owyn as he stared at the door.

Owyn stepped back into the shadows of the hallway, letting the light of the torch between himself and the stairwell naturally make him naturally harder to see by contrast.

Theremin rose up and nervously checked his surroundings. He was unscathed, except for his pride. He petted Sayine, looked around with his crossbow, and whispered to the others to come. “We need to open this door: 1 2 3” he whispered, making sure he was not the one to open the door, but remaining ready with his crossbow.

Seeing the flickering light below, Mindra quickly moves down the rest of the stairs hoping to catch a glimpse of what it is. She pauses and gives a meaningful look back at Theremin's clumsiness, but there is nothing to be done for it. This is the only way out and Mindra just hopes to spot whoever it is before they spot her.

OOC: With her bow ready Mindra will move the rest of the way down. If there is cover from the stairs she will do that. If not she will run and dive behind any cover she can find on the next level. If there is no cover at all she will just risk it. :)

OOC: There is no cover. Mindra would land on the landing. The door to the next level is open, and Mindra can see the torchlight flickering from a doorway down the hall, about two doors down.

Harb was getting annoyed with all this foreplay. Besides, if they were kobold, they'd see him just fine like this. Better to bring the light to them.

"Butrea, see if you can toss that torch into the stairwell real quick." He whispered, a bit more loudly than he thought prudent. She was around a doorframe from him so it was hard to judge just how quiet he could speak and still he understood. Still, he didn't expect the little buggers to know what he was saying, and he didn't mention planning to rush up and get in their faces the moment the torch was thrown. It might even blind them for a moment.

Crouching slightly, he prepared to follow through with his plan.

Beturea took a breath and nodded. She prodded the door open a bit more and then threw the torch.

Mindra, Theremin, and the others saw the torch come flying out of the doorway, momentarily blinding them in the darkness of the passage as it clattered to the stone.

“Uh-oh!” Sayine whimpered, curled around Theremin’s shoulders.
