Heroes Season Two Resuming?

You never asked me my opinion. And I don't see how attempting to persuade you that it is a good show would be a useful task. I don't have any problem at all with you not liking the show. I just have a problem with you implying that anyone who disagrees with your opinion is dumb. And while you didn't use the word dumb, that seemed to be your intent with that "saved from their own judgment" comment. It was unnecessary. You should be able to handle someone liking something you don't like without feeling the need to drag others down and "do battle" over a TV show (which is what is implied by your "pick up the gauntlet" comment).
Well, I didn't ask your personal opinion, but I tossed out a general question to all Chuck fans that I'm really waiting for more than a bunt at. I would really love their help in getting this bee out of my little bonnet. If you don't feel motivated to explain your fondness for it to a nobody like li'l ol' me, then hey that's fair enough--but then I shouldn't be evoking indignation either.

Having said that, I've grown fond enough of your posts in other threads to offer you some select advice: turn your hyperbole detector on when you're reading those posts of mine. I've been laying it on pretty thick.

Fair enough.

Why I like Chuck:

1) I like the female lead (Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski). At first I didn't think that was the case, but with time she's become very likable. She can handle hand to hand combat in a believable enough fashion that her character is reminiscent of Jennifer Gardner's character from Alias (who I also liked). Her fondness for Chuck feels believable to me, and the complexity of her prior relationships with Chuck's former roomate ads an interesting element to the plots. I think she has some good acting chops.

2) I like Adam Baldwin, and have since Firefly. His character is very entertaining on this show, in a similar way to his character on Firefly/Serenity.

3) I like the mcguffin. Sure, it's not believable. But I still find it interesting and fun. That Chuck can flash on pretty much anything at any time is a new mechanic (to me). Sort of like the Akashic memory, in a weird way.

4) I like that it isn't overly episodic. You can miss an episode and it doesn't completely mess with the show, much like the first 5 years or so of Stargate SG-1. I don't like the overly episodic nature of genre shows these days, and it's refreshing that Chuck is not a slave to it like so many other shows seem to be lately.

5) I like that they actually pay attention to the fact that the Hero has a real, actual home life with it's own complexity and importance. Saving the world is all well and good, but characters seem a lot more believable to me when the "normal" part of life isn't conveniently cut out. The Hero has friendships, a boss, a job, a family, a love life, rent, a healthy worry for his own health, and hobbies.

Props on the well-delivered sarcasm, but I contend that there are movies and TV shows out there that don't cop out in casting. Masi Oka is a very convincing nerd.

Chuck's a PC gamer and works in a psuedo-IT job. That doesn't mean he needs to be written and casted as the uber-unkempt/militiant fanboy total geek stereotype which has little to do with reality anyway (at least, if the people I've worked and gamed with over the years are representative).

Hey, thanks for indulging me. I really wasn't expecting that to happen. I'll have some things to consider next time I catch it on TV or hear co-workers talking about it.

Wow, who would have thought that an internet message board focused primarily on gaming would be the place to find someone complaining that the lead character nerd in Chuck isn't sterotypical enough.

I would consider myself a nerd in a similar vein with Chuck. I play RPGs and video games. I quote Star Wars and Monty Python movies (but unlike Chuck, I don't speak Klingon). I am a Supervisor at a Biotech company. I shower, brush my teeth and even floss daily. I'm no fashion model, but I wear decent clothes and would say I rank in the "average" category in looks. In college I was the "safe" guy; friends with many attractive women, but none of them would date me - I was too insecure and awkward. Now I am much better in social situations, but I had to learn to overcome my own natural introverted tendencies.

I can't see why Chuck is in any way an "unconvincing" nerd.

Because he's not round. Way too many thin people.

Reasons were discussed in detail well before you posted this.

I'd say Chuck's little buddy is a good nerd archetype. And like I said, so is Masi Oka. You don't have to be fat to be a nerd...though it doesn't hurt.

Agreed. I don't understand Felon's original premise regarding nerds. Chuck's character is "enough" of a nerd (or, rather, "average joe", which is what the show's premise is) for me, in TV-land. (Indeed, Hero's Hiro does "nerd" better, but then, I don't particularly care about different shows trying to one-up the other. He doesn't do "average joe" better, though.)

And refuted by Thornir's post, AFAIC.

Though I completely agree with you on Felon's premise... average Joes are not CS or EE students at Stanford.

If Thornir look as good as those pictures of Zack Levi I posted, then I'll rest my case. And that's the part you guys have chosen to ignore. You're letting a little bad hair day convince you that someone who's handsome is average-looking.
