What type of battlemat do you prefer (if you don't use battlemats, just ignore this poll), hexes or squares. I know that D&D 3e officially uses grids, but I know a few people (mostly wargamers) who prefer a hex grid over squares, since it tends to be more accurate in determining the shape of circles and cones as far as spells go. Others seem to prefer the simplicity of a square grid.

So what type do you prefer?

IF I use a mat (a rare event) it is always with hexes.

Despite how 3.whatever might have been designed, I hate the whole bit of having to refigure diagonals to have them make sense. It's much easier conceptually to work with hexes (or to ignore such matters altogether and really get back to wargaming roots -- not overlay, just rulers, templates, and figures).

We use a battlemat with squares on one side and hexes on the other, but I can't recall ever using the hexes, in my game or anyone else's. :( Might have to try it out...

I am torn between them, I prefer hex's tactically but squares work really well for D&D as they look like the tiled flagstone floor of a dungeon.

I abstain.

Squares!

Any benefit in movement is more than made up for by the pain in the @ss of trying to map out the environment...

Particularly if you start using 3d dungeons, such as you can make with Hirst arts...
