Hex grids vs. square grids?

Definitely squares. Speaking as a DM, and having used hexes for GURPS, I must say that I like squares infinitely better.

It's just too much of a bother making maps on a hexgrid. The 1/2/1/2 rule works pretty well.

I use squares! Hexes are for those equiradial plebes! :)

(I've actually used hexes too (any port in a combat storm), but prefer squares.)

Hexes . Square people are so L7.
After all witches don't go around throwing squares.
I never had trouble drawing on hex map.

I definitely prefer hexes, the shapes, positioning, and so forth are a lot more organic and realistic.

However, since D&D is built on a grid, we generally use a grid. Oh well.

Sort of a parallel to my whole McGaming existence lately.

Not a wargamer, but I use hexes whenever possible. Trying to explain to people new to the tactical portion of this RPG that the first diagonal counts as 1, the second as 2, the third as one is a pain in the ass. Furthermore, hexes make for better facings for monsters/enemies, anyway.

If all DnD maps weren't printed on a square grid, I'd never use the squares on my battlemat.

definitely hexes... the only time I use squares is if there is a strong player preference, or (theoretically) if there's going to be a lot of 3-D movement, since squares, well, cube better. But overall, I like hexes a lot better...
