Hidden tomb found in pyramid's shadow

Egyptian discovery could lead to deeper treasures

Some of the tiny statues found piled inside a niche in a 2,500-year-old hidden tomb near the Pyramids in Giza, Egypt, are shown as they were found in this photo from the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Cooool. Thanks for the link. Boz, it doesn't sound from the article like the main tomb was elsewhere. They think that there may be a larger sarcophagus at the bottom of this one.

I really like the little figurines.

What's really interesting about this new tomb is that if the accepted dates for it and the other Gazan sites are correct this one is a real "newcomer" to the area having been built, according to the article, in 664-525 B.C., which means it's about 2000 years younger than, for example, the accepted age of the Great Pyramid. A similar time span from the newer tomb would put you in 1336-1475 AD - roughly the time period of the hundred years war - when bowmen were supplanting knights as the most powerful units and towards the end of which gunpowder was just beginning to make a widespread entrance into western warfare. Makes you think...
