I think this is not the higgs boson, but rather something attracted to the boson; known as the boson mate.
 

This isn't the first bet he lost, and I believe he bets like I'd do, if I were to bet - bet so that you can't lose. Either you're right all along, or you lose and something cool has happened.


Indeed. He might just bet to provide added incentive to those who would love saying they won a bet against him. :)

Basically. Hawking bets so that if he loses, physics wins. And if physics loses, he at least gets a consolation prize.
