Highest level you've played

My highest in 1E/2E (started in 1E, converted to 2E) was a 27th level fighter/35th level mage, who then took a test to become a god, and passed with 7 HP remaining.

My highest in 3E was a Rokugan Samurai which we played from first level all the way up to 68th. We played every Friday, often carried on to Saturday, and sometimes into Sunday. It was nice being neighbors in the military in Monterey.

Anyways, those are my two highest level characters, and they were both played from level 1.

Rediscovering the level range for the H4 - Throne of Bloodstone module (AD&D1) -- for levels 18-100 -- prompts me to ask this question:

What's the highest level character you've ever played in any edition of D&D? A character you played for at least one game session.

What's the highest level you've ever heard of someone playing in any edition of D&D?

Bullgrit
Total Bullgrit

As a player--I think the highest I've ever gone was 15th level in a 3.x campaigns (twice).
As a DM--I ran a campaign that ended at 24th level.
As a DM (one shot)--we wanted to really try out the Epic Rules when it first came out so I ran a one shot of 39th level. It was fun, but a lot of work. I took my hand at designing a 39th level paladin/divine champion that was about 11 hours. I think I still have that character saved on my hard drive somewhere.

Rules Cyclopedia: 8th level mystic - (not going back)
1st Edition: 7th level thief - (not going back)
2nd Edition: 13th level fighter | 9th level thief - (not going back)
3rd Edition: 60th (??) level - paragon human (epic) Monk 20 | Psion 2
Mutants & Masterminds: PL 14 "mecha pilot"
Star Wars d20: Jedi Consular 4 / Jedi Healer 3 / Jedi Investigator 2 / Jedi Master 2 (Jedi 11th :p) - (switching to Saga Edition, or heavily modifying d20 SW classes)
4th Edition: 5th level kobold rogue - (not going back)
I realize that SW and M&M are not D&D... but I consider them moreso than 4e
:p

70th level in 3E; 30th level Wizard, 30th level cleric, 10th level Mystic Theurge. I had to work my way up to 70th level from 1st level.

played that series using a 100th lvl paladin. even had a mini for it from the Comedy Lords boxed set.

highest i ever heard of was a guy in my old high school who claimed to have a 1024th lvl magic user.

1st thru 3rd editions - 46th level with the same character updating and converting as we went along.

Edena, 161st level (in Storybook Terms, 35th level, or on a par with Ioulaum of Netheril, except as a cleric, not a wizard.) (My SN is based on this character.)

The highest level Player Character I ever saw played with my own eyes was a wizard of 75th level named Soloron.

The most powerful NPC I ever saw played, personally, was a 750th level wizard..

The Highest level PC I've ever seen with my own eyes was 25th (2e) and heard of was 30th (3e). I can't imagine what you do at these levels for challenges. Armies of balors? 1d8+1 wandering tarrasques? Or do you open up the deities and demigods and wipe out one pantheon at a time?

How do you challenge someone that high?

I think the highest 3E character I had was around 18th level in a overpowered Forgotten Realms campaign. A Druid/Shifter.

The highest 4E character (that I am still playing) is an 18th level Dragonborn Warlord. (He started at 15th level after we converted "Savage Tides" from 3.5 to Pathfinder to 4E). The DM seems to think that the campaign will go into the high epic levels, and so it seems he will definitely be the highest character I've ever played in D&D.

You can't, not in the normal sense. The game mechanics break down.

Consider Waldorf. He appeared in Dragon Magazine, and he claimed to have nuked the world of Oerth (the Greyhawk Setting), rendering it lifeless outside of his own castle, and having imprisoned the dieties in a mine under his castle.
This, obviously, is outside of the normal game mechanics or typical gaming situations.

The responses, from a variety of people who send letters in, all declared hostilities to Waldorf using non-conventional methodology.
The methodology by which Waldorf was finally defeated, ramming a Spelljammer at near light speed into Waldorf's castle, filled with nilbogs, was a very unconventional answer to Waldorf's unconventional situation.

There's another analogy. Consider the nymph. In the old days, in 1E and 2E, a nymph blinded all onlookers who failed their save versus magic (which was a long shot, even then, to make for most PCs, NPCs, and monsters.)
If the nymph was nude or disrobed, a failed save meant death. Instant death.

So imagine the Morgul Host attacking Minas Tirith, and lo and behold, a nymph stands on the walls and disrobes.
Since those orcs all need an 18 to save, and the effect is Line of Sight out to infinity or the visual capabilities of those looking, we are talking about thousands of orcs instantly killed.

So the Morgul Lord, reasonably angered by this, throws Shape Change, 1E.
Remember that spell? Remember what it could do? Any 18th level wizard could have it, and the Morgul Lord could easily have been one, so ... he turns into a balrog, and proceeds to level Minas Tirith single-handedly.
Until, of course, Gandalf uses his own Shapechange to turn into a Solar, and we have a battle worthy of the Last Alliance, at the Gate of Gondor.

So much for any sort of conventional battle.

The same thing happened with the other classes.
With the cleric, Heal/Harm and Resurrection (NO save, MR useless, in 1E, against any of these) Or, maybe, the Super Plague of Spectres?
With the thief, Hide in Shadows 100% and Backstab times multiple weapons (all covered with Instant Death, No Save Poison, or better yet, Morganti Death Magic.)
With the fighter, Haste + Something Else + 2 (or 2+) Vorpal Swords + Girdle of Giant Strength + Gauntlets of Ogre Power + A Ring of Vampiric Regeneration (he does 200 hit points of damage, regenerates 100 hit points from this alone.)

As you said, 1d8 + 1 tarrasques.

Of course, high level characters will presume to *tame* said tarrasques, so they can have them as their *personal mounts*, and if the tarrasques get out of line, just whack them in the head again, and ...

I think the fun was primarily in the Getting There. Once You're There, where to go next?
When you're at the Top of the Mountain, how do you climb higher?

In 3E, my highest level character was a level 17 Paladin that I leveled up from level 1. Though we did use faster advancement than standard.

In 4E, my highest level character is a level 2 Wizard. What can I say? We just started the campaign barely a month ago.

It isn't easy. My epic level group wound up going on a multi-planar adventure that lasted years and even took them to modern day New York City. The final climatic battle involved several high end dragons and a few goodies from Mongoose's Epic Monsters tome. At the conclusion, they faced the avatars of Vecna, Lloth, Tiamat, and Iuz. Once the avatars were defeated, the characters were given the choice to assume those deities' portfolios.

I know I've posted it before, but I'll attach them again if I can, here are my two epic level characters.
