Or maybe it's a minor action that takes 5 minutes to execute, so if someone does it mid-combat, everybody waits 5 minutes while the component gets attached or removed, and then the fight resumes?

This is clearly the most entertaining option, and as such must surely be the correct one.

It reads suspiciously to me like it was originally one, and they wanted it to become the other, but the typoed re-write slipped through the cracks because it still looked like English.

That's my bet - never attribute to malice what can be explained with simple human error. :)

I also am playing a warforged and as we play it in one turn you can remove or add an item (minor action), take a move action, and if you did not effect your weapon then you can attack as well, however the item affected can not be used for 5 rounds. It takes a couple of minutes form the item to fully integrate, assuming it is not just screwed on and there is magical bonding process involved.
