Awaken has a target of "Animal or tree touched." Familiars are treated as magical beasts and can't be awakened anyway.
Greg

That was established in the other thread; I wasn't questioning that.

Now, I was going to suggest the Leadership feat. But really, I was simply suggestiong something that would be very Small. I could see a high level wizard or sorceror with an Imp Rogu2 or 3 as a familiar.

I don't think it makes sense for familiars to gain their own levels.

A familiar is supposed to be literally an extension of the master, sharing a portion of his mind. That's why they have the empathic link, and the same connection to an area (for purposes of Telport), and so on. It gains power as the master advances, but it doesn't advance on its own because it lacks a truly independent existence.

I'd only allow a familiar to gain levels (or HD) if the connection between it and the master were severed first. As far as the master were concerned, it'd be as he dismissed the famliar; he'd lose XP, and wouldn't be able to summon a new one for a year and a day. The familiar would then be an independent creature, with its own XP total and the ability to gain levels.

If you want your familiar to cast spells, work your way up to epic levels and take Familiar Spell. :)

What are 'Those Creatures'?
what i meant was: according to the MM entries for an imp, mephit and pseudo-dragon, they benefit from creature advancement (by type; pgs 12-14)

imp (pg 48) advancement: 4-6 HD (Tiny)

mephit (pg 133) advancement: 4-6 HD (Small); 7-9 HD (Medium-sized)

pseudodragon (pg 152) advancement: 3-4 HD (Tiny)

as opposed to those creatures in the MM who specifically advance through character levels (like humanoids or giants)

and Dr. Zoom and hammymchamham are correct about the rarity of advancement by levels by such creatures.

sorry i wasn't more clear

Same thing goes for Dragons. But they can take character levels, as well as anything with the mental ability to do so. Just like the Pseudo-dragon Sorceror. :)

There is a better solution to the basic issue, actually.

The familiar can activate magic items (especially the more intelligent ones), so a wizard just needs to create appropriate magic items for his familiar.

Back in 1e my main wizard gave his familiar a ring of spell storing and an Ioun stone of spell storing, both with useful escape/dispel/rescue spells that he could use if I became incapacitated. This kind of tactic would be even easier in 3e.

Cheers
