History buffs - historical slave turnover question

Lol you know, if we are talking about slave labor in a high magic fantasy world humans are probably a fairly poor option in the first place.
The system would probably be similar to the slave system in classical greece. Where the slaves were all actually government property and were just loaned or rented out to citizens for thier use. Having more money the government would probably have skeletons (they are quick, work all day and all night without ever having to eat or be closely overseen), constructs for heavy labor or gaurds (not golems, but there are lots of other cheaper constructs), and creatures like ogres or hill giants (captured young, liberally charmed or dominated) for big jobs that require more brains then a construct has. Even for jobs that require human like beings goblins would be way better. They are weak and cowardly so you dont have to worry about revolts much. They have as much intelligence as people, are smaller so probably eat less. And they breed like rabbits and have a faster life cycle. So the slave population could more easily be self sustaining and likely even grow. The quick life cycle would also have more of them born into slavery. Creatures who have never tasted freedom are less likely to fight for it. Plus if you compare them to wild goblins the slaves life actually looks better in some ways. I mean even a dirt floor hut and small rations are better then sleeping in a nasty cave, being hunted by everything in creation and probably starving to death on a regular basis.
Why would anyone choose all the hassle of human slaves in a world with goblins? Except maybe for concubines. Which is a fairly limited field and in many fantasy settings the impression given is that elves are more attractive. So even for pleasure slaves the elven races are a more likely option.

Hmm... I'd think you would want something strong, not too bright and non-chaotic for your fantasy slave population. Goblins may be cowardly, but they're just as bright as humans and therefore just as capable of plotting against their masters. They also have a lower carrying capacity because of their size.

How about Lizardfolk instead? Strong, healthy, but not quite as bright as humans (+2 STR, +2 CON, -2 INT) and Neutral alignment. The Multiattack feat and good AC might make them less suited to slavery though (wouldn't want all your slaves to walk around armed and armored...)

Half-orcs are another option. +2 STR, -2 INT. Don't remember if they tend to have a Chaotic alignment - if so, that would be a minus (harder to keep them in line...).

Anyone know how fast lizardfolk and half-orcs reproduce and reach adolescence? IIRC, 1/2 orcs are faster than humans, dunno about lizardfolk.

Any other humanoid races that are something like +2 STR, -2 INT, and AL: non-Chaotic?

You are taking them out of the workforce while they are pregent and nursing and won't recieve any return on that investment for at least 16 years.

The generation of our parents started working a lot earlier in their life than 16 years. At least in rural areas children had to work. I know that my mom and her sisters worked on the fields, in the household, etc. as far as they were able to.This was common practice. They didn´t do the same work as adults but other stuff children could do.

In the 19th century children worked in mines and factories, as chimney boys or iother jobs.

I'd say there would be a big advantage to having an egg laying slave class. Eggs could be shipped easily and raised away from the emotional bonds of the mother. Might even be able to freeze them or something.

Hell man, elves. In most campaign settings they are on the run and have been getting thier butt kicked by humans for centuries, so your not gonna have to worry too much about reprisals. You take one elven slave and feed him right and you have a slave who can serve your family for centuries. They will have a slow turnaround but its a good long term investment. Mix em up with the other slaves a little and you get half elves. Quicker physical advancement and still a long life. Thats more bang for your buck there. And evil religions all seem to hate elves so the religion would give a good impetus for enslaving them.
I dont necesarily see a chaotic alignment as a bad thing in slaves either. Chaotic people might be harder to break. But having less personal discipline might make them easier to break too. And even if they did try to revolt thier chaotic tendencies would hamper them working together or organizing it well.

The negative con penalty for elves would make them less than ideal for most slavery dependent economies.

That said, there is no doubt that there are any number of marketting strategies one could use for people in a fantasy setting.
