Excalibur kind of grows on you. One thing that really bugs me about that movie is that no one ever takes off their armor. Ever.

Yes, this bugs me as well.

A good friend and fellow DM's wife wrote a book based on the King Arthur legends, and she freely admits in the preface that she took libertys whenever possible. There was no way she couldn't but even if she didn't she would have never billed it as the "true story".

Sounds like D&D games, doesn't it? I've only heard rarely of characters removing armor...... Excalibur was a very good Arthurian movie.

And she wouldn't have been the first one to "take liberties" with the legend. Various bards and skalds have done that for centuries.

Edit: I'll wait until I see it to pass judgment on it. Same thing like I did for the D&D movie.

To tell if this movie will be crap, just familiarize yourself with the executive producer --- Jerry Bruckheimer --- whose name is sadly synonymous with producing big-budget, brain-dead blockbusters. :uhoh:

Except that Bruckheimer has also produced a fair amount of pretty good movies: Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, The Ref, The Rock, Remember the Titans, Black Hawk Down, Pirates of the Carribean, Crimson Tide, Veronica Guerin, and so on.

Sure he's produced some crap, Kangaroo Jack springs to mind, and a bunch of big budget silly movies like Armageddon, Enemy of the State, and Bad Boys (I and II), but his track record isn't something that can be dismissed out of hand.

Beverly Hills Cop and Black Hawk Down were good, I'll admit --- but Pirates doesn't hold up to repeat viewings and the rest aren't exactly stellar films (Crimson Tide being nowhere near as good as The Hunt For Red October, for example). The Rock was better than some of his other brain-dead blockbusters, but still no prize. If I see Jerry's name attached to a project, I automatically assume the worst.

BTW: You forgot to include American Gigolo in his list of "good" films --- I just watched it recently and enjoyed it more than I expected. 'Course, that's reaching back past Beverly Hills Cop...
