Doh! Is Vietnamese a tonal language, like Cantonese? In that case, there'll be tones on that vowel. Hence the "curve". Tones are more complicated to do here though...
OK, so there's no nasal (maybe the "a" is nasalized, then). A bit like a "k" but not quite? Right; two candidates here:
Let's call it [K]: like the [k] of "cat", but further back.
Or [x]: pronounced in the same place as [k], but more rasping. This is the sound at the end of "loch" or "Bach".
