[hivemind] Look on my works ye mighty and despair

Doh! Is Vietnamese a tonal language, like Cantonese? In that case, there'll be tones on that vowel. Hence the "curve". Tones are more complicated to do here though...

OK, so there's no nasal (maybe the "a" is nasalized, then). A bit like a "k" but not quite? Right; two candidates here:

Let's call it [K]: like the [k] of "cat", but further back.
Or [x]: pronounced in the same place as [k], but more rasping. This is the sound at the end of "loch" or "Bach".

(Hah-ahk)? very light k....hmmm....

Its a very soft sounding name - but has a sort of hard edge to it. argh I know that doesn't make any sense. I should get someone who can say it properly...say it and then I need to figure it out....

Tell you what. Get one of your parents to record your name, post the sound file here, and I will try to transcribe it! If I can't, I'll enlist the help of my supervisor. (She's got a doctorate in phonology, she could do it in her sleep. ;))
