You could apply the same logic as Savage Species, and simply spread teh benefits of the tmplate over a number of levels more or less equal to it's ECL.

Ah.

OR you coud do what i do, slapping them with negative levels equal to the ECL increase, which they can only remove with XP. This is due to the shock to the system.

But what are the results from this XP-loss?
It would be a leap back in the development of the PC. And when you change it into a few levels they would slowly turn into the "new " creature.

Thats what I mean, But what would be the concequences?
I kinda like the idea of putting all the characters ( including npcs and monsters) in the same mechanism of levels. It could become multiclassing supreme, but is this bad?

It also would open the "partialy templated" route.

Well, a Savage Species class must be taken in entirety before taking levels in another class. So a minotaur must complete 5 levels as a minotaur, maturing in the process before he can atke fighetr levels.

I think.

What do you mean by partially templated?

I've only had one person gain a template in game. They had to die in the process so the +1 was offset by losing a level. Convenient, huh?

They don't actually lose XP. WHat I do is this. Assume a 6th level PC becomes a vampire (level adjustment +5). Makes him ECL 11. Assume as well the average party level is 6, so this guy is 5 levels above the party. Unbalanced? Yes.

So, I slap him with 5 negative levels (-5 on attacks, saves, and skill checks). When he arns enough XP to take him to 7th level, he instead takes a negative level off (so it's now -4). He doesn't increase his class levels at all. When he earns enough to take him to 8th, the negative levels go down to 3 (so he's now -3).

Alternatively, he can live with the negative levels and advance a level in his class. So he will keep the -5 on everything, which is a simple way of balancing him with the other characters. It has worked so far for me.

partial templated: vampire is ecl 5 so becomes a 5 levels PrC

If a character gets the vampire bug and levels up he or she gains 1 level in vampire. He gets some abilities of the vampire class but is not a full vampire :)

Also if Im building a monster I can give that monster only 2 levels ( out off 5) of vampire it becomes a "vampiresque"createure not a full vampire.

Al kindsa custom goodness, without stepping out of the frame work of using a level system for everything.

Yep, that would work. More work for you though in order to come up with it :)
I think that skade isright though. The guidelines in SS can be used to splice out a template into a PrC. that should do it.

Luckily you can do that when you need said info. The idea is there, implementation can wait until needed :)

The requirements will be very stricked though: at GMs discretion!:D

That was more rules discussion than the Hive has seen in months!

Dang it, watched Spriggan twice tonight, and I've only actually watched about 20 minutes of it.
