Hobgoblin Fluff

Could he just be describing an encounter in the mod where hobbos are breeding Watchspiders in the fore mentioned Keep?
When I first read that, I saw "hobos" instead of "hobbos", which is a thousand times awesomer to my mind.

"Hey! HEY! There's a whole buncha adventurers comin' up the trail, an' I think they're tryin' to steal our bottles and cans!"
"Didja ask 'em if they had a quarter so we can catch the bus?
"Yeah, an' they told me to piss off!"
"Aw, dang it - release the spiders! Also, pass that bottle of Boone Farm!"

Dood your hobo fluff is so wrongbad!

Everyone knows true hobos don't beg for quarters or take the bus... They hop oin the back of trains and tell each other stories while eating beans cooked over a campfire.

What's with the hobo fluff change for the sake of change?!?!?!!11 ;)

I guess you didn't see Dave Noonan's latest blog, then. Hobos and drifters are being merged into one, since they basically fill the same role:

When we got to editing the urban encounters section of the rules, we noticed that there was very little difference between the hobo and the drifter, mechanics-wise. By folding them into one entry, the two creatures take up less space in the Monster Manual, and the DM can decide for himself whether his particular hobo travels by boxcar or by bus, or whether he carries his treasure in a shopping cart or in a bandana tied to a stick over his shoulder. Players should watch out, though - the hobo's spell-like powers have been beefed up, and a few cool surprises await the incautious adventuring party, as my playtest group found out last Wednesday!

Too Many Humanoids

This comes from original D&D in which monsters didn't "advance" so in order to create varied threats you had to have many varieties of humanoids. Orcs had on hit die, gnolls two, kobolds a half, etc.

Spiders? That's their best idea? We're going to do what GW did two decades ago and have them ride big ole spiders?

As far as I'm concerned, every hobgoblin culture that I ever feature in D&D again will essentially be the skorne from IK's Monsternomicon II. That's a culture that just screams hobgoblin to me.

Same here. In fact, although I don't intend to run an Iron Kingdoms game, I may just drop the Skorne into my homebrew instead of the hobgoblins.

Somehow, my imagination brought up this conversation between some hobgoblins when the first of those nasty, uncontrollable beasties he mentioned was full-grown:

"High Chieftan, the results of the latest breeding are ready for your approval."

"*grunt* Fine, show me. If I like it, I might not feed you to it."

"Yes sir, this way, sir. It's down in that pit, sir."

"Uglier than I'd expected. And a spider?"

"We crossbred it with an owlbear and a grick, if it makes any difference."

"Is't that your assistant Tardak it's gnawing on?"

"Ummm, yes. It's a bit uncontrollable, really. Prone to kill the first thing it sees. It spits poison, though!"

"Sooo, we can't use it without it maybe turning on its handlers?"

*shrug* "We can just tell them to run, really fast?"

"I like it! How quickly can you breed 100 of them?"
