Holidays

I'm curious. In home-brew campaigns you have run, have you made up holidays for your worlds? If so, what are they?

The Feast of Matariki (New Years) takes place between the Heliacal rise of Matariki (the Pleiades) and the first new moon of the year. Each month is 30 days long and 12 months gives 360 days - the extra 5 days (to make a 365 earth-like year) are covered by this Festival

Each Full Moon (days 14 - 16 of the Month are Holy Days) - ie my months are split into two 14 day 'weeks'

and the Summer Solstice is the Time of the Boar Chase when the young warriors graduate from trainees to full warriors (and participate in chasing a boar which they must catch and kill without using weapons other than their hands and teeth (and any rock they can pick up...)

In my current campaign, all holidays are religious festivals of some sort. There are four gods: The Father (LN), The Mother (CN), The Son (LG) and The Daughter (CG); there is one NE power that I've never named, but he doesn't get a holiday :)

Each god has a seasonal festival.

The Festival of the Daughter: Spring; a festival of renewal and prosperity. All healing is done for free on this day (not that She demands more than a token for it otherwise). Most marriages are made on this day. Gaity and fun are the order of the day.

The Festival of the Son: Summer; feasting and competitions. Much jousting and such. Bargains are made and broken, trade is started or stopped.

The Festival of the Mother: Fall, the harvest. A time of spirits and storms. People go out in costumes, to distract the spirits and lead them away from where they live.

The Festival of the Father: Winter; new laws are handed down. Judges must come to a decision by midnight in certain cases. A solemn time of reflection and pennance and prayer.

Don't really have a weekend; that's a modern concept.

No 'sabbath' day to keep holy and no forbiddence on work on that day. The Church generally declares a Day of Prayer every now and then, when it needs to, and there is generally no work on that day. Custom has one falling at the end of every month, but technically it must be renewed each time by the primate of each region. Some primates never have one. Others use it for political gain.
