Uh, I heard some disturbing things about the privacy angle of gmail. Stuff about how they scan your email to profile you for advertising and that they keep even deleted email perpetually -- even if you delete your account.

Most webmail providers do something pretty similar. It's just that Gmail makes it quite obvious. The other guys are just "out of sight, out of mind". I use web mail for mailing lists or for things I suspect will garner me spam. I own my own domain for anything "real".

Gmail has generally won me over. It's not earthshattering and won't make you orgasm, but it's kinda spiffy once you get used to it. I've got something like 50 invites, myself. If you want one, I use the same name there, too. Drop a line.

Not quite yet. Google's is still in Beta. There are certain combinations of cities, etc. that you will get faulty, misleading, or no information for.

Like the fact that Waldenbooks is marked as being halfway across town from reality. I believe there's actually a hot dog stand where the flag is.

It's not quite so cool on dialup, but it is good. I'd love to play with it on a good connection!

Is your computer old and slow too? One of the coolest things about the interface there is how much it does client-side without having to continually grab stuff from their server, but the downside is that it appears to be a bit processor-intensive.
