I have always thought of the 'cacophonous roar' produced as being equivalent to a bit of liquid nitrogen in a sealed 2 liter bottle.
Last time that happened in the building it brought people over from the building next door wondering who had set the bomb off

Seems a bit like having thunder in ones hands, perhaps it is a bit quieter than that though.. it definately stunned the guy who was a few feet away from it though, but that was probably more from shock.
