D&D (2024) Homebrew Backgrounds

As a fun I did how about I throw out a background for people to come up with as a challenge? First challenge.......Tax Collector.
Tax Collector
Ability Scores: Dex, Int, Wis
Feat: Observant
Skills: Investigation, Insight
Tool: Calligrapher's Supplies

You have, at some point, been entrusted with the most important official duty of the realm: assessing and collecting remittances requisite upon the permanent or semi-permanent indwelling residential occupants of the declared, or undeclared but enforced, territorial boundaries subject to the sovereignty under which said occupants owe lealty and allegiance. Simply put: you have been a tax collector. And it is no easy job, despite what the (many, MANY) critics will tell you. If it isn't avoiding the active efforts to end, bribe, or deceive your person, it's the back-breaking hours of poring over book after book after book of records to keep the hoi polloi honest. Of course, you had a keen eye...perhaps too keen. Tax collectors make good money, so what has disrupted your routine? Do you still do the work? Are you on the run from a particularly vicious debtor? Or have you dabbled in a bit of 'cooking' yourself, so to speak?

Their absence is only a miner problem.
Child Prodigy
Ability Scores: Dex, Int, Cha
Feat: Lucky
Skills: Perception, Animal Handling
Tool: Choose one kind of Gaming Set
Equipment: Choose A or B: (A) a gaming set, a trinket that is a symbol of how awesome you are, a hatred of sand, and 48 gp (B) a sack of money.

Despite your lack of years, you are far more proficent in your chosen area than most adults. Everyone thinks you are destined for great things, but will you become a great leader, and agent of multiversal balance, a powerful dark lord, or die in a futile attempt to save some dinosaurs?

Gardener/Landscaper
Ability Scores: Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom
Feat: Magic Initiate (Druid)
Skills: Nature, Animal Handling
Tool Proficiency: Herbalism Kit

You have learned how tend to hedges, lawns, and gardens, and have picked up a few tricks along the way to keep the rodents and other pests from digging up the flowerbeds or eating the vegetables.

I would change the skills to Investigation and Stealth. Gardeners are adept at eavesdropping on conversations from outside open windows.

That's closer to what I had for the Maid :)

Also, I added the Gardener to my initial post, to consolidate all the ones I came up with. Also added descriptions for them.

A little bit sillier.

Clumsy Maid
Ability Scores: Constitution, Wisdom, Charisma
Feat: Lucky
Skills: Insight, Animal Handling
Tool Proficiency: Weaver's Tools or Cook's Utensils

You've always been considered a klutz, never able to do anything right. However your clumsiness has an endearing quality, and the gods seem to have blessed your luck, perhaps out of pity. You have a knack for understanding people's feelings, and animals seem to be friendlier around you too. Fresh-baked cookies fix everything, right?
