You ever feel a desire for something...different? Of course you have- you're a DM!
This thread is for sharing your homebrewed variants on the TSR/WOTC published races players can use for PCs- what did you change and why?
Example: Borlon's commentary in Post #64 in this thread. .
or mine in the same thread, Post #81 .
Or my post elsewhere:
Those elemental dwarves will have no real gender, and their racial attributes will vary depending on the kind of stone from which they are carved- granite dwarves will be tough, but not as tough as those metalic and slow ones carved from meteoric nickel-iron; basaltic dwarves would be very heat resistant; dwarves carved from opal may be poor warriors, but mighty mages.
Making the elves into sentient plants explains their connection to nature, their long lives, and definitely makes them distinct from faeries. Plus, they look GREAT in the spring when they start to bloom! This will also change what kinds of spells affect them and their weaknesses. While being physically tougher, they'll be more vulnerable to fire (perhaps on a seasonal basis). Oh, and there will be NO Half-elves.
Upon further reflection, I may also make Druid a favored class for them...maybe Ranger as well...

In the campaign I'm designing right now, dwarves are earth elementals (native to the Prime Material plane) that reproduce by carving new dwarves from stone, and the stone used to create them affects their stats... Elves will be replaced by beings that have the same general build, culture and features as the elves we know & love, but are actually plants! They still retain many of the same features- long life, affinity for bow & sword- but instead of Wizard favored class, they are natural Sorcerers, and are physically tougher than the elves you know...
