Homeless Carless first-level characters.

Dumb Rules Question of the Day:

If you're a first-level character, do you have to purchase a home/apartment and car/truck? Seems that they wouldn't be expecting you to do so with that 2d4 Wealth bonus, but the rules aren't clear.

My inclination as a DM is to let people have inexpensive civilian stuff at first level, and when goblins blow up their car, they have to actually purchase a new one. Am I being too lenient?

I'd assume that a character is renting a small apartment and gets by on public transport. I'd allow the apartment because the PC still has to deal with the rules of the apartment- No pets, probably no guns, etc...

I believe the d20 Mod book states that all 1st level characters are assumed to have a place to live [house/apartment/barracks/squat/etc], and a way of meeting their basic survival needs [low level characters shouldn't quit their day jobs].

How old are you making your characters?
The rules don't exactly say it...but I would figure in real life somewhat.
Most people don't actually own a house until late in life... mostly they are paying the mortage. but that really just depends on the location.
I mean, if your setting is in a big city... likely the majority of the characters are renting apartments, not necessarily owning them. So put it under basic needs.

The wealth system seems to deal much more with what is available at all times, and not what is something in the background to the story.

Since I usually run one shot adventures I let the PCs have a place approperate to thier Wealth Points/ Social standing/ age/ Level. If one is say a 30 YO teacher at a local college S/he would have a nice apartment and a small car( until it is trashed by Goblins :D). On the other hand the 18 yo freshman at the same school is staying at the Dorm or with the "rents" and has a POS car that breaks down all the time or takes the bus to and fro.

Just for the record, my current character [Lester Rosenberg, aka Lester Bang] is 17 and just from graduated high school. He still lives in Cherry Hill, NJ, with his parents, and takes the high-speed line to Philadelphia to go to rock&roll shows and umm, adventure.

He has a 13 wealth bonus and a means of support; he's a teenage proffesional celebrity journalist [he writes music criticism and gained fame as a Columbine survivor].

The way my GM is running things, it doesn't matter whether or not he lives with his folks in the 'burbs [and reduces their lives to a constant state of terror, seeing as he keeps winding up in the hospital after getting in trouble in the Big City], or whether he's on his own in a small apartment. Basic housing relative to your Wealth bonus is comes free upon character creation. Now if he wants a swanky teenage batchelor pad, or a home in NJ like his parents, that's a different story.

In the d20M game I just started playing in (last night!) the assumption is that all PC's regardless of their age, starts off living in rented accommodation and using public transport as appropriate to their wealth. Purchasing a Condo, a car etc has to happen in-game.

Ideal? Probably not! My Professor (Patrick Wu) managed to blow most of his wealth on a Large Condo (dropping from 11 to 4 - he's struggling with the mortgage payments!!). everyone tools around in the dilletante's hired cars since she can hire them all day without blinking at her level of wealth (about 13?).

So tacky - yeah, you're being too lenient! I'll tell on you at the RBDM club! :D
