Then I put magnets on the bottoms and used magnetic paint on a piece of thin plywood. Now I just plop the modular pieces onto the board and they stay in place with no problem. Even if I tilt the board completely veritcal. Someday I'll post some pics.

That's a really good idea! We were thinking of using the tiles with a vinyl mat, but I suppose once you had enough tiles, you wouldn't need a mat anymore. So if you're planning a game can you just put the tiles onto the magnetic plywood, and then, say, stick it in your closet until game time? That would be pretty ideal, and cut down on a lot of set-up time.

We've used a piece of sheetmetal. The magnetic easels for use with dry erasable boards are decent for the purporse.

The "stick factor" provided by magnetic paint is not enough to support the weight of cardstock applied to foamcore.

Those are very nice. Is that really a giant squid or even (dare I ask?) a kraken? Definitely like the displacer beast...

Mine don't look nearly that cool yet, since the actual minis aren't painted yet. But I'll take a picture of what I have tonight.

It is a kraken! We didn't put it in the picture, but he comes with a small box full of extra, seperate, tentacles - all on a blue, water-looking, base. The final effect is that it looks like his arms go "into" the battle mat and then come out again 60ft away.. to show off his reach.

It was a fun encounter, because I started with just the tentacles on the map - the main body didn't show up until a few rounds later.

Foamcore works, cardboard works - but the best thing to do is to print to heavy cardstock and either laminate them (both lightweight and water/spill proof) OR
print to cardstock and glue to additional cardstock, cardboard and foamcore can both be permanently dented and cruched with repeated use, multiple layer cardstock (think paper plywood) is immune to denting, however all three mediums are subject to bending and creasing.

Ok, here are mine! Besides what I mentioned below, there's a smaller winged critter (intended as something like a darkenbeast from MoF) and a naga of some yet-undetermined sort. The painted ones are the tokens from tiny to huge, with "scary" faces. The battlemap is the old keep from WotC's free adventure "The Ettin's Riddle."

I hope you can see the humor in this (I'm really not trying to be mean) but when I saw the third set of minis all I could think of was, "I am Gumby, Destroyer of Worlds..."

A few I whipped up a couple years back.

Briefly:
-Printshopped a page of squares, making sure to darken a few of them to break things up a little.
-Ran off a bunch of sheets on some groovy grey marble paper.
-Cut out the rooms I wanted and glued them to posterboard.
-Cut out posterboard and got them laminated with a rigid "ID card" laminate.
-and walla
(HeroQuest doors are a bonus if you have them.)
They've served me well and you can write on them all you want with wet erase.
Only thing I'd change if I were to do it again was to add a few dots of something on the bottom that will make them not quite so slide-y on a polished tabletop.
