Horrid Wilting...

Zaknafein

First Post
have a question on how many creatures it effects and how big its dimensions are.... if someone can clarify this to me... it will be great.... the entry is in PHB pg 215

Necromancy
Lev: SOR/WIZ/WATER 8
Com: V,S,M/DF
Casting time: 1 action
Range: Long
target: Living creatures, no 2 of whom can be more than 60 feet apart
Duration: INSTANT
ST: FOR HALF
SR: YES

this spell evaporates moisture from the bodies of all the subjects living creatures, dealing 1d8 points of damage per caster level (max 25d8). This spell is especially devastating to water elementals and plant creatures, who recieve a penalty of -2 to their saving throws.

The spell affects any number of chosen creatures, as long as no two creatures are more than 60' apart. It's similar to a burst with 30' radius, but more selective. (You can throw horrid wilting into a melee, and target the hostile creatures while leaving your allies unaffected.)

I think you're wrong on this one.

The target says "Living Creatures" ... okay, so this means no undead, etc.

"No two of whom can be more than 60 feet apart" -- Which means this ISN'T a a 30' radius spell.. it would say that if it was. it doesn't need to affect an entire radius. Obviously, you can target one creature if you wanted to and not the surrounding creatures. This makes me think that you COULD cast this spell into melee, leaving allies unharmed.

The description doesn't say otherwise.

It affects every creature in a 30' radius.

It's quite possible to draw an equilateral triangle with three sides that are 60' where none of the points fit within a 30' radius sphere (just place the two ends 5' below the widest part of the circle and the top will be around 46 feet away from the center).

In general you need to be able to draw a 60' line between any pair two creatures in the effect of the spell. How you count it (center, edge) with regards to the grid is really a matter of group preference, I'd run it from the centers, myself.

Sorry, dude... yeah, speaking to the French guy...

I'm not French!

As for Horrid Wilting (and those other spells with horrid areas of effect), i was indeed wrong, i oversimplified it.

Maitre D, the non-French guy (hey I don't have anything against French people, if that's who you happen to be, then that's fine, who am I to discriminate?)

Horrid Wilting should allow you to pick the targets affected. Otherwise, how would you be able to determine "living creatures, no 2 of whom can be more than 60' apart"? As somebody said, the equilateral triangle of 3 creatures 60' apart from each other is clearly not in a 30' radius circle, yet this is a legal target configuration. Obviously, the caster must pick which creatures are to be affected for the target descriptor to be meaningful.
