p. 157 under Mounted Combat, Horses in Combat, last sentence in this section: "For simplicity, assume that you share your mount's space during combat."

Most reach weapons cannot be used within 5ft, except the almight spiked chain of course.

Monk with a Glaive works pretty good also.

The trick is to make your MOUNT bigger...

Animal Growth?

Other such tricks include handling your animal as a free action (Animal Companion), Sharing healing and defensive spells with your mount (Animal Companion), giving your mount bonuses against domination effects (Animal Companion), defensive abilities like Improved Evasion (Animal Companion), and, above all, more Hit Dice (Once again, Animal Companion).

Druids make EXCELLENT mounted characters, since being mounted also synergizes with summoning. Druids should be taking Combat Reflexes ANYWAY, because of their Wild Shape (Huge) + Animal Growth into Gargantuan creatures pre-epic.
