House Rules Suck

I'm sick and tired of people with their "house rules". I mean, why do it? Change this and change that, what makes people so arrogant that they think they know better than experienced game designers, that they can change things in the rulebooks.

Most people who house rule something just shouldn't. Sure you can ban certain things, but change? My god, Gary Gygax said it best that house rules scum up the D&D game, and that it isn't true D&D.

Why do I house rule? Because Gary and the rest of the D&D writers did not tailor the game specifically for me. So, I need to tailor the game so that it best serves the needs for my DMing style and the playing style of my players.

I don't know if it's always arrogance. Some people just don't like the way that a particular game mechanic is handled, so they change it.

I think that the designers made a lot of their decisions to keep the game fast and simple. House rules can add a bit of realism, but at a cost, that cost being an additional level of complexity. For players and DM's who are willing to accept the burden, house rules can be great.

I don't like the way that 'casting defensively' works because it makes no difference who is threatening you. It could be a 20th level fighter or a 1st level warrior and the DC is the same. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

The same goes for tumbling. It doesn't matter if your tumbling past a 20th level fighter or a 1st level warrior, the DC is the same. That doesn't make any sense to me either.

Would it be arrogant of me to change these game mechanics to reflect my personal preference? I don't really think so.

Just wanted to add that I feel a lot of sympathy for you if your DM is really heavy handed about his house rules and is not willing to accept player input. That can be pretty rough. I discuss all of the changes that I'm considering with my players and get their input before I make any decisions.

Yes, and that editorial was published in a magazine that isn't anything but, well, a collection of House Rules and variants.

Also, D&D started as House Rules for Chainmail.

Take that as you wish.

Meanwhile, I'm going to go finish my rewrite of the PHB.:D

True D&D?!?? ROFLMAO!!! What a load of crap. If Gygax really did say that, he's even more arrogant and stuck-up than I ever imagined.

Because I do know better than them. All rules are a matter of opinion, and in my opinion a big part of the 3rd ed D&D rules are illogical, ill thought out, or are simply not fun.

What I'm sick and tired of is people like you who seem to think that those you call "experienced game designers" are some sort of omniscient beings who can do no wrong as far as RPG rules are concerned. They can make mistakes, and often admit it. Ever heard of 3.5e?
