House Rules You Don't Realize You Have

This still seems like another "what are your house rules?" thread rather than the listed title. I vaguely remember a similar thread a month or two ago.

To be what the thread title says should people posting stuff like: Did you know you can't turn while running? Or, do you allow spellcasters to relearn spells at any time of day after appropriate rest?

We can always make a single 5' step during our turn. Normally, you can't actually do this if you've made a regular move, etc. I just noticed this a little while back, and so far I've, uh... forgotten to bring it up with the DM. ;)

I always took Mr. Gygax's example of Hitler as an ugly 18 charisma to heart.

That is why he introduced Comeliness...

...and I think there are at least a few high Cha monsters (under the current rules) that are not particularly attractive, but it is all in the eye of the beholder.

I actually find the opposite to be true. I have house-ruled more in 3.5 than any other system I've run. But I also don't allow a ton of non-core material, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

But that is the thing, explicit house rules I don't remember seeing in the 1st ed era (actually in 2n ed I did see quite a few)...

...DM rulings and precedents that ignored or went against the rules as written on the other hand were very common. Though the DM and players may not realise it.

Almost everyone I know who played AD&D did this to one degree or another: I can still look through parts of 1st ed Dungeon Master Guide and finds rules or "rule-like commentary" (that could affect play) that I didn't know where in there!

From the PHB p.9: "Charisma measures a character's force of personality, persuasiveness, personal magnetism, ability to lead, and physical attractiveness." (Emphasis mine)

And my rationale for the change is exactly the same one you used.
I would have to say, then, that I as well house rule this. Charisma IMG has nothing to do with physical attractiveness.
