"House-sized" Meteorite hits Australia?

Apparently, a very large meteorite may (or may not) have hit Australia a day or two ago.

I am surprised no one was talking about the ones last week that lighted up the sky in Washington State!

If a house-sized chunk of rock fell from the sky, the impact would be... impressive.

What I'd like to know is how the observer on the ground figured the thing was "house sized". Aside from the fact that you can't generally see the rock itself through the glare of ionized gases, and aside from the fact that you're talking aobut an object that is moving wikkid darned fast. If you don't know how far away it was from you, judging scale is darned near impossible.

Oh, those Aussies. A meteorite hits a house in New Zealand, so naturally a bigger meteorite lands in Australia a week later.
