Some DMs like to 'fudge' rolls behind the screen, or keep aspects of a monsters stats secret, but many players also like the sense of 'taking thier fate in thier own hands.'
The 4e resolution system would seem to easily lend itself to letting players do that. Players already roll 'attacks,' including things that were 'saves' in 3E. It would be trivial to create mathematically identical 'dodge' and 'saving throw' rolls for the players to use in defense. The monster's attack would simply have a target number needed to evade/resist it.
You could even have players roll to 'soak damage' when they're hit - you'd take the monster's max damage, plus the number of dice it rolls, and tell the player "soak X dice of damage" the player rolls, totals, and you subtract that from the monster's damage. Should be mathematically identical to rolling the damage behind the screen.
Anyone else know players who might like that aproach? Any problems with it?
