i was thinking of a Paladin gaining some sort of resistance to the overwhelmingness... perhaps the barrier for "Overwhelming" could increase with level? Say, instead of 10 being the highest level of Aura that you can stand, it would be 10+(Paladin levels/2). that way, even a sixth level Paladin could stand in front of a balor without problems.

that, or add a will save to resist being overwhelmed, with a DC of the aura's strength, and a bonus to resist being overwhelmed based on the paladin's strength.

Fidgit: I checked my DMG and nauseated is a "condition", included in the "condition summary" section and everything!!! I quite like it as an alternative to fear, which I guess would be the usual reaction to overwhelming evil.

Saepiroth: yeah, that's a good idea. And of course, there is a Will save (if I add a resistance, it ought to be a set DC, and if I don't, it should probably be something like 10 + evil creature's HD/evil artifact's caster level).

randomling: for converting Divine Energy into Lay On Hands, how about allowing each DE slot to fuel an additional Cha Bonus HP of healing? So each DE slot spent would effectively add one level to the Paladin. This would be very useful at low levels, and not multiply into insanity at high levels.

You could also allow Paladins to chanel a DE slot into a Protection from Evil (on themselves or another creature, lasts 10 minutes) or a Remove Fear effect (range: touch, single creature only).

For saves vs. Detect Evil, I'd make it a Fort save to resist nausea.
