How about a collection of EN World wisdom?

What? Me Worry?
I was reading the thread about Piratecat being called "superjudge," when it hit me that I've seen a lot of good advice and tips posted here at EN World over the time I've been reading the boards. There are a lot of talented folk who obviously like to write and help others to have a good gaming experience, so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in collecting the best of all this into a netbook.

The problem, of course, is deciding on what would get put into it. There has been a lot of material posted here and on the various old boards. With any luck, people have saved their best stuff, and would be willing to re-post it.

I know this is a bit nebulous. Saying we're going to collect the "best of the best" of EN World is one thing; actually doing it is another. Anyone have any thoughts? I have a couple:

* People could post what they consider to have been their best material. This means that people have to be able to self-edit; not everything one has posted can be considered "the best." Choosing what you consider to be your best - and most coherent and complete - work can be tough, but I'm sure everyone can do it.

* If you remember particularly insightful and useful material posted by someone else, you could post a link to the thread/archive it's in. If it's no longer to be found on any of the boards - archived or current - then see if you can contact the original person and have them re-post it. Also, if the material is posted on someone's website, give us a link. In such a case, however, I'd say we wouldn't necessarily include it in the collection. This is because the point of what I'm proposing is to collect material from EN World community members that would otherwise disappear into the ether of cyberspace. If it has a home other than EN World, then there is no need for it to be included - unless the person who wrote it wants it to be for some reason.

Overall, I don't know how interested any of you would be in this type of project. I just thought I'd toss it out there and see what everyone thought about it. The type of material I was thinking about was stuff like Piratecat's DMing tips/house rules, SHARK's various essays, the various systems for economics I've seen posted, etc. The important thing is that it was originally posted here at EN World.

Anyone else like this idea?

Salutations,

Well, I am not sure I would like to see a netbook, but perhaps something along the lines of EN's review page.

Have a series of subjects (Campeign Preperation, Campeign Economics, House Rules, Dragons, etc)- and people could post their own essays and such.

Of course, it would need to have a tight control system- or else it would just be a message board.

For example- have a review board (3 people) look something over and vote to have it posted.

Wouldn't a specific thread or two in the archive forum do the trick ?

Is it possible to archive just one post ?

Piratecat's answer in the "superjudge" thread
is worth a thread in the archive !

Just my two (euro)cents ...

I agree this would e a nice idea, but one that might be difficult to pull off. I have to agree with Chacal that if handled correctly the Archive Forum might be able to handle this. Still if someone had a lot of time to really do it right that would be something to behold. Unfortunately that person is not me.

It sounds like a good idea. Not all members read every forum (I know I can't-there's just too much) and miss stuff that they would find useful. Whether it's a netbook or a forum on the boards, I'm all for it.

I don't know. Outside of rules discussions and House Rules, how much of what goes on here has a nice Beginning--Middle--End shape to it?

I mean, what I enjoy (and get the most out of) here on the boards is the long winded discussions on Women in Gaming, Psionics: Do they Belong in Fantasy, and suchlike.

They are generally good exchanges of ideas, but I don't know that there is a "single kernel" of wisdom to be distilled from any of them (or, generally, any conclusion reached).

I think a collection of house rules (Like Dragoth the Destroyer's template system for example) would be good to have all in one place.

It would be almost as good as having the search function turned on:)

I think that narrowing it down to House Rules is a good idea. Also, I was thinking it would be good to have it so it can be read offline, or printed out so it can be read at one's leisure. Staring at this damned screen gets old.
